Harrison Schools Briefly Locked Out After a Man Breaks a Window, Fearing He Would Be Shot

Four schools in Harrison, New York, were placed in a temporary lockout on Tuesday morning after a report of gunshots near Marion Avenue in downtown Harrison. The incident, which began around 9:40 a.m., caused a precautionary school lockout that lasted until noon, though officials later confirmed no one had actually been shot.

The Harrison Police Department notified the Harrison Central School District shortly before 10 a.m. that there had been a report of gunshots in the area.

Acting quickly, the district initiated lockout procedures at four schools: Parsons Memorial Elementary School, Harrison Avenue Elementary School, Louis M. Klein Middle School, and Harrison High School.

Under a lockout, school buildings are sealed, and no one is permitted to enter, but regular classroom activities continue inside as normal. Students and staff were safe throughout the duration of the incident.

What Police Found on Marion Avenue

When officers arrived at a home on Marion Avenue, they found bullet casings on the scene and a broken window. A man was discovered bleeding from the side of his face and was transported to a hospital in White Plains for treatment of what appeared to be a facial laceration.

Despite the initial 911 call reporting that someone had been shot in the face, town officials confirmed that the man had not been struck by a bullet.

Investigators spoke with the homeowners, who said they had no relationship with the man and that he was not a resident of the home. According to the homeowners, the man had broken the window himself, apparently out of fear that someone was going to shoot him.

His identity has not been publicly released. Marion Avenue was temporarily closed while police conducted their investigation at the scene.

Lockout Lifted, Officials Say No Danger to Students or Public

By midday, the lockout at all four schools had been lifted. Children were permitted outside for recess once authorities cleared the scene and confirmed there was no ongoing threat.

Town officials were direct in their messaging: there was no danger to students, school staff, or the general public at any point during the incident.

The situation attracted attention on social media, particularly after News 12 Westchester posted about the lockout on Instagram. Some residents were quick to note that by the time the post went up, the lockout had already ended.

One commenter wrote that it had been a false report and that no shots were ever fired. Others expressed alarm, with at least one commenter noting that local residents live with a constant fear of gunfire in the area.

The episode highlights the difficult balancing act that school administrators and law enforcement face when dealing with unverified reports of potential violence near schools.

Acting with caution is the right call in such moments, even when the underlying report ultimately proves to be unfounded. In this case, the lockout protocol worked exactly as it was designed to: keep students safely inside while police investigated, then return to normal operations once the all-clear was given.

Harrison is a suburban town in Westchester County, and incidents like this, even when they turn out to be false alarms, can shake a community. Parents who received alerts Tuesday morning would have understandably been anxious until word came that the lockout had been lifted without incident.

No charges have been publicly announced in connection with the man found on Marion Avenue. It remains unclear why he was in the area or what led him to break the window of a home where he did not live. The Harrison Police Department has not released additional information about the investigation at this time.
