Willard, Ohio, Softball and Volleyball Player Makenzie Sykes, 18, Passes Away Unexpectedly, Leaving Her Mother, Teresa

The small community of Willard, Ohio, is grieving the sudden and devastating loss of 18-year-old Makenzie Sykes, whose passing has left family, friends, and neighbors heartbroken.

Makenzie, described by those who loved her as a ray of sunshine with a contagious smile and a heart of gold, passed away unexpectedly, leaving behind her mother Teresa, siblings Braden, Bryan, Rachel, and two younger siblings.

Friends and community members have flooded social media with tributes, each painting a picture of a young woman who made everyone around her feel seen and valued. Childhood friend Emersen Oney, who grew up alongside Makenzie, shared a moving tribute online.

“Makenzie was the most genuine and sweetest person I’ve ever met in my life,” she wrote. “From her witty sense of humor to her huge heart, she was genuinely a ray of sunshine. No matter what she was going through, she always made sure everyone else was okay because that was the type of person she was.”

Oney recalled the little details that made Makenzie uniquely herself, from crafting together as children to playing volleyball side by side, even mentioning a birthmark on Makenzie’s neck that she always disliked but those close to her found endearing.

Those small memories speak to how deeply she was known and loved by the people in her life.

Nick Woodlock, another friend, honored Makenzie online as “forever a friend and forever a flash,” asking the community to pray for the Willard family as they navigate an “unexpected and difficult time.” The phrase “forever 18” has since become a rallying cry across social media posts remembering her.

A Community Coming Together in a Time of Need

In the wake of Makenzie’s death, family friend and colleague Deanna Fishbaugh launched a GoFundMe campaign to help the Sykes family manage the financial weight of funeral and memorial expenses.

As of the time of writing, the campaign had raised $350 toward its $4,500 goal, with three donations coming in within the first hours of it going live.

“My heart is broken for my friend and colleague as she faces the unimaginable loss of her beautiful daughter,” Fishbaugh wrote in the campaign description. “No parent should ever have to endure the loss of a child. Let’s come together as a community and lift this family up with the love and support they need right now.”

Nurse Sarah Bailey, who knows the family personally, also reached out publicly, urging her followers to keep the entire Sykes family in prayer. “It isn’t fair,” Bailey wrote. “A young, beautiful, loving, caring, smart, ambitious young lady with so many dreams.”

For those who knew Makenzie, the grief is raw and real. She was a teenager who cheered for younger teammates, celebrated others’ accomplishments with genuine joy, and carried herself with a warmth that left lasting impressions.

At 18, her life was just beginning, and the hole she leaves behind reflects just how brightly she burned during her time here.

Those wishing to support the family can find the GoFundMe by searching “Support for Makenzie Sykes’ Family” on gofundme.com. Sharing the campaign is equally encouraged by the organizer.
