Bronx Man, 23, Fatally Shot Multiple Times on East 207th Street in Norwood
A 23-year-old man was shot and killed in the early hours of Monday, June 8, on East 207th Street near Decatur Avenue in the Norwood section of the Bronx. The shooting happened just after midnight, at approximately 12:08 a.m., sending police and emergency medical workers rushing to the intersection outside P.S. 56 elementary school.
Officers arriving at the scene found the young man lying on the street with multiple gunshot wounds to his torso. Emergency medical technicians transported him to nearby St. Barnabas Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. No arrests have been made, and the investigation remains ongoing, according to an NYPD spokesperson.
A police source told the Norwood News that investigators are looking for two males who fled the location in a black BMW sedan, heading northbound on Parkside Place after the shooting. The motive behind the killing remains unknown.
Police cordoned off East 207th Street between Decatur Avenue and Parkside Place as detectives worked through the scene in the predawn hours.
Witness Heard Shots from a Nearby Laundromat
A young resident who was at a Laundromat on Decatur Avenue, closer to East 204th Street, said he heard around three gunshots before he came across the victim. About six minutes after hearing the shots, as he was walking back toward Parkside Place, he found the man face down on the street. He and his friends immediately called the police.
While waiting for emergency services to arrive, the group said the victim’s phone began ringing. The young man who found the victim answered and said he believed it was the victim’s wife or partner on the other end of the line. She asked about him, and the youth told her he believed the man was dead. He said the woman was distraught.
The witness estimated the victim was around 25 years old and noted blood was visible on his shoulder and arm.
Another resident nearby said he had heard the gunfire from inside his home but had initially thought it was fireworks.
Neighbors Describe a Quiet, Hardworking Block
The shooting shook a neighborhood that residents describe as generally peaceful. One male resident, speaking in Spanish, said the incident was deeply out of character for the area. He called it a good neighborhood filled with hardworking people and said it was unusual to see a heavy police presence there.
A police official at the scene was overheard referring to the number eight, which witnesses and reporters present interpreted as possibly referring to the number of shots fired.
Detectives were later seen pulling aside the group of young men who had found the victim and interviewing them at length.
The NYPD is asking anyone with information about the shooting to contact the Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-TIPS (8477) or, for Spanish speakers, 1-888-57-PISTA (74782).
