Ames Neighborhood on Edge After Late-Night Shooting Leaves Two Men Injured

The Ames Police Department is investigating a shooting that injured two adult men late Monday night in a west Ames neighborhood, according to officials.

Officers responded to the 200 block of Franklin Avenue at 10:43 p.m. on June 1, 2026, after reports of a shooting.

Upon arrival, they found two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds. Police said the investigation is ongoing and that they do not believe there is any continuing threat to the public.

The incident unfolded quickly, drawing a significant emergency response. Multiple ambulances from Mary Greeley Medical Center EMS were dispatched to the scene, where paramedics assessed and treated both patients.

While one victim sustained injuries described as minor, the second patient suffered severe wounds and required air medical transport via MercyOne AirMed for advanced trauma care at a facility equipped to handle critical injuries.

Despite the severity of one patient’s condition at the scene, the Ames Police Department stated that the injuries to both individuals are believed to be non-life-threatening.

A Coordinated Emergency Response

The response involved several agencies working together. Along with the Ames Police, the Ames Fire Department, the Iowa State University Police Department, and Mary Greeley Paramedics all played roles in managing the scene and caring for the victims.

EMS crews credited their partners for the coordinated effort in stabilizing both patients under difficult circumstances.

KCCI News, which first reported the shooting, noted that the 200 block of Franklin Avenue has drawn attention in the past.

Some community members commenting on social media described the Franklin Avenue and Tripp Street intersection as a location with a history of concerns, though police have not publicly linked this incident to any broader pattern or named any suspects.

Investigation Continues, Tips Sought

As of Tuesday, no arrests had been announced, and police have not released the identities of either victim.

The department is asking anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted by calling the Ames Police Department directly at (515) 239-5133, or through the anonymous tip line at (515) 239-5533.

Community members may also contact Crime Stoppers of Central Iowa at (515) 223-1400, or submit an anonymous tip online at www.crimestoppersofcentraliowa.com.

Sergeant Amber Christian of the Ames Police Department has been designated as the media contact for questions related to the press release.

The shooting comes at a time when Ames, home to Iowa State University, has seen growing attention on public safety. The Franklin Avenue corridor in west Ames is a residential area, and a late-night shooting there drew concern from neighbors and community observers.

Mary Greeley Paramedics noted in their statement that they could not provide updates on patient conditions and directed any further questions about the shooting to the Ames Police Department.

The agency expressed gratitude to all first responders involved in what was described as a coordinated and swift response.

Police emphasized that any criminal charge is merely an accusation and that defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone who witnessed the incident or has relevant information to reach out as soon as possible.
