Report: No Change for Mayor, City Council Salaries

By

MIDLAND, Mich. — The current salaries for the Midland City Council and the Mayor are set to remain unchanged this coming year. The Local Officers Compensation Commission, a small body charged with examining the pay of local public officials, has recommended that the salaries continue at their current levels. The current salary for a councilman is $4,200 annually, and the Mayor of Midland receives $6,400 per year.

“The Commission accepts the philosophy that the purpose of compensation here is not to enrich members of the Council at civic expense nor induce anyone to run for the Council for monetary motives, but to cover incidental, out of pocket costs of such service and to provide some reimbursement for time taken away from family and business,” a portion of the Commission’s report reads.

The process is not initiated by the City Council, however the council has 30 days from when the commission filed its report (Nov. 11) to either take no action or, by a four-fifths vote, reject the recommendation.

The City Council will vote tonight on whether or not to direct City Manager C. Bradley Kaye to place the filing on the Dec. 9 agenda for the council as well as give the public a chance to examine its findings.

The 30 day time frame for the council to act expires on Dec. 11.
