Glenn Outraises Schulz In Latest Campaign Finance Reporting Period

By

MIDLAND, Mich. — State Rep. Annette Glenn (R) raised a staggering $107,160 during the one-month post-primary campaign finance reporting period. The filing deadline was Thursday. Sarah Schulz, the Democratic candidate, raised $27,567.60. PAC money contributed heavily to Ms. Glenn’s fundraising haul, totaling $92,000 during the period. Ms. Schulz received $3,770 from PACs.

The numbers leave Ms. Glenn with $207,623 in cash-on-hand, more than double that of Ms. Schulz, who has $100,988. In 2018, Ms. Glenn defeated Ms. Schulz 20,209 votes to 18,629, however Ms. Schulz received more votes in the City of Midland. Ms. Glenn serves as chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military & Veterans Affairs and State Police.

“Rep. Glenn won more votes than her Democratic opponent did in 2018,” Glenn campaign manager Anna Dean said Friday in a press release sent to the City Paper, “And based on her exemplary first-term record of hard work and leadership for families and flood victims in Bay and Midland counties, we know her support is even stronger now, including many mainstream Democrats who’ll be crossing over to vote for the reasonable, rational, mature representation Rep. Glenn has provided.”

State House Democratic candidate Sarah Schulz raised $27,567.60 during the reporting period.

During the reporting period, the Schulz campaign reported 585 donations, and the Glenn campaign reported 174. The average donation to Ms. Schulz was $47.58 and the average donation to Ms. Glenn was $631.76, according to numbers sent to the City Paper from the Schulz campaign.

“We had over 4 times the amount of individual contributors and over 95 percent less PAC funding than my opponent and, not surprisingly, she still out-raised us,” Ms. Schulz told the City Paper. “This is further proof that Annette Glenn is part of the political machine powered by wealth and special interests that we are all so tired of. Our fundraising results really show the amazing ‘people power’ from our community working behind my campaign.”

The Glenn campaign did not respond to a message from the City Paper seeking a response to the criticisms from the Schulz campaign mentioning the amount of PAC money her campaign accepted.

“Annette will continue to focus on ensuring our schools and communities are safe, flood and COVID victims get the help they need, and people can safely get back to work so they can make ends meet,” Ms. Dean said. “She knows we’re all in this together, and that together, we’ll recover and rebuild. That’s the positive message that’s resonating with the donors to her campaign and with voters.”

  1. “Exemplary first term”??? What are you talking about? Glenn has spent the majority of her term bashing Sarah Schultz and Governor Whitmer while towing the Republican line to get nothing done in our state.
It’s so obvious from the data alone that the people want Sarah Schultz in charge but the money and PACs don’t. Sarah is the one standing up for our community whether it be to represent the para-professionals during the pandemic or supporting flood victims during crisis. Glenn just pops in to shake hands for donors and leaves out the back door, ignoring her constituents.

  2. If I were the reporter’s editor, I’d be asking when a number starts to “stagger.” Editorialize much?

Applause to Sarah Schulz for her appeal to middle-class voters and over wealthy special interests.

    1. As long as Schultz wants to push unreliable, intermittent, NON-dispatchable, land intensive and visual blight wind developments massively subsidized by federal handouts, she should not be getting anyone’s vote who is concerned with property value loss and a loss of a good night’s sleep ————— for the next 20 plus years.

  3. If Glenn’s support is “even stronger now”, why does she have so few donors? Sarah’s supporters may not be wealthy & powerful organizations, but she has over 3 times the number of individual financial supporters and a small army of volunteers willing to put in hours and hours of time each week to get out the word that Sarah is committed to leading and working for her community. How do I know that? Because Sarah is already doing it.

    1. Because many of us little people sent our small amount through a PAC designated for Annette Glenn’s campaign, which would turn around and send it on to her.
Annette us doing a great job for all people.

  4. Sarah Schulz gets majority of her support from the people! Look at Annette’s votes… against all of these bipartisan bills….. AGAINST a state mental health hotline, AGAINST dental testing and screening for kids, AGAINST pregnancy warnings in liquor stores, AGAINST creating a suicide prevention commission, AGAINST liquor authorities seizing illegal alcohol!!! Ask her WHY????

    1. Great idea:

      a state mental health hotline,
dental testing and screening for kids,
      pregnancy warnings in liquor stores,
      creating a suicide prevention commission,
funding for increased liquor sales supervison

These are all understandable items for a wish list. But, if she approved ALL of these,

she would then be called a “MONEY IS NO OBJECT, RAISE TAXES, LET’S SPEND MORE AND MORE liberal”
      .

AGAINST a state mental health hotline, AGAINST dental testing and screening for kids, AGAINST pregnancy warnings in liquor stores, AGAINST creating a suicide prevention commission, AGAINST liquor authorities seizing illegal alcohol!!! 1. Because the money would be better spent going to already existing hotlines, etc than spending more money to set up new ones. A much better use of taxpayer money.

  6. I think the third sentence says it all, “PAC money contributed heavily to Ms. Glenn’s fundraising haul, totaling $92,000 during the period.” I wonder how much of that PAC money came from outside the district and outside of Michigan. I also wonder if Ms. Glenn is still accepting PAC money from Boyce Hydro and her friend Lee Mueller, who operated the Edenville Dam.

  7. The above commentator already said what I was going to say. I can only add that I willingly give to Sarah’s campaign because I have seen how committed she is to working to bring people together. She has a background in conflict resolution and this state desperately needs her expertise now!

  8. Let me see, do I want a rep who gets large amounts of money from PACs and other big donors or a rep who receives smaller donations from a widespread group of people? I think I’ll take someone who is a representative of and supported by the people of Mid-Michigan over a person who is beholden to unknown dollar signs. I want someone in touch with what the average Mid-Michigander goes through and needs than big money any day. Sarah Schulz demonstrates every day that she is committed to the people of this community, whether she’s listening to the needs of her prospective constituents or volunteering her time to clean up flood damaged homes or distributing masks to those who need them or distributing meals alongside other volunteers to the people of Sanford who were hit hardest by the dam flood or organizing online town halls to help people navigate FEMA and insurance companies. That’s the kind of leadership we need!

  9. It’s all here in black and white. Do we want the candidate who has big money leading her by the nose or do we want Sarah who leads us to turn our passion for decency into service and respect for all people? We are an avalanche of heartfelt supporters who will not rest until Sarah is elected.

  10. Interesting the Headline. Seems like it should have read something like, “Anonymous PAC money makes the Difference in Fundraising Efforts between Glenn and Schultz.” The actual article goes on to appropriately note the differences, but the headline goes out of the way to down play the lede.

  11. The only thing I find “staggering” about Annette Glenn’s fundraising haul last month is the opportunity for corruption when $92,000 comes in the form of untraceable PAC contributions. Call me old-fashioned if you like, but I’ll cast my vote for her opponent, Sarah Schulz, who’s funded her campaign with modest contributions from a broader base of local middle class voters.

  12. If there are so many “mainstream Dem voters crossing over”, please run some of their testimonials. Just like in 2018, PACs and the MI GOP itself will be contributing even more to her campaign next reporting period in an effort to win via misinformation and outright lies.
