Lester Holt Bids Farewell to NBC Nightly News After 10 Years: ‘The Honor of a Lifetime’

Lester Holt has officially wrapped up his final night as anchor of NBC Nightly News. After spending more than ten years at the desk, the veteran journalist gave an emotional goodbye on his May 30 broadcast.

At 66, Holt took a moment to thank viewers from across the country and around the world. “After 10 years at Nightly News, it’s my final broadcast,” he said. “From Paris to Tokyo, Uvalde to Ukraine, the greatest generation to the wild blue yonder, the news we’ve covered, the people we’ve met and the stories we’ve told. Your stories. My gratitude to all of you on this special night.”

An Emotional Goodbye to Viewers

Lester didn’t hold back his feelings. He talked about the tough stories the show has covered. From mass shootings to natural disasters. From the COVID-19 pandemic to moments of hope.

“As anchor, it has been an honor to lead this program and an honor to be welcomed into your homes. I’m so grateful for your trust,” he shared during his final sign-off.

He also reminded viewers of what really matters in journalism. “Around here, facts matter, words matter, journalism matters and you matter,” he said with confidence and warmth.

Sharing Joy Even in Dark Times

One of Holt’s most beloved habits was ending each show with a lighter story. Something to bring a smile, even on heavy days. “That’s why I often like to leave you with something to smile about,” he said. “Moments that reassure and connect us.”

He added, “I’ll miss our evenings together, and I will miss the team that puts it all together, my dear friends and my colleagues.”

What’s Next for Lester Holt

Lester isn’t retiring. He’s moving into a bigger role with Dateline, a show he’s been part of for years. Speaking earlier on the Today show, he said the shift came at the right time.

“You hit a certain age and you start kind of thinking, ‘What’s the back part of my career going to look like?'” he said.

He also mentioned he’s looking forward to spending more time with his grandkids.

Welcoming Tom Llamas

Holt ended his final Nightly News with best wishes for Tom Llamas, who will be taking over the anchor role on June 2. “I wish him great success,” Holt said.

It’s the end of an era for NBC Nightly News, but Lester Holt’s voice will still be part of the stories we hear.
