A routine Wednesday morning on Interstate 93 turned tragic when a single vehicle crash near Londonderry, New Hampshire, claimed the life of the driver.
New Hampshire State Police say the crash happened on the northbound side of the highway, close to the Route 102 overpass, and left passersby and emergency crews dealing with a scene made worse by fire.
According to troopers, calls about the crash started coming in just before 10:30 a.m. on June 24.
A vehicle had struck a bridge abutment near Exit 4 and almost immediately caught fire.
The exact cause of the initial collision has not been released, and investigators say that part of the case remains open.
Good Samaritans Tried to Help Before Flames Took Over
What stands out most from the early reports is the reaction of ordinary people who happened to be nearby.
Before troopers or fire crews even reached the scene, several bystanders had already pulled over and rushed toward the burning car.
State police say these good Samaritans attempted to pull the driver free from the wreckage, and some of them grabbed fire extinguishers in hopes of knocking down the flames long enough to get the person out safely.
Despite their efforts, the fire had already taken hold too strongly, and the damage to the vehicle made rescue impossible without specialized equipment.
The bystanders had to step back as the blaze intensified, unable to do more without risking their own lives.
It is a reminder of how quickly a crash scene can turn from survivable to fatal once fire becomes involved, even with people willing to risk their own safety to help a stranger.
Highway Shut Down for Hours as Investigation Began
Once Londonderry Fire Department crews arrived, they were able to extinguish the flames, but by then the driver had already died at the scene.
Troopers have not released the identity of the victim, saying that notification of next of kin still needs to happen before any names are shared publicly.
Investigators are also withholding details about the make and model of the vehicle for the time being.
The crash forced a shutdown of part of I-93 northbound for roughly four hours while crews worked the scene and gathered evidence.
Drivers in the area faced delays as troopers redirected traffic away from the overpass while the investigation got underway.
The Londonderry Fire Department was joined on scene by the New Hampshire Department of Transportation and the Office of the State Fire Marshal, all assisting with different aspects of the response and the ongoing inquiry into what led to the crash.
State Police are now asking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or who has any information that could help the investigation to reach out directly.
Trooper Natalie Pullen has been named as the point of contact for tips related to the case.
This crash adds to a string of serious incidents on this stretch of I-93 in recent weeks, including another crash near Londonderry just days earlier that left a motorcyclist injured and requiring an emergency medical flight out of the area.
Local officials have not commented on whether road conditions or traffic patterns in that corridor are playing any role in the recent uptick in serious accidents, but the investigation into Wednesday’s fatal crash continues as authorities work to determine exactly what happened in the moments before the vehicle struck the abutment.
