Greer, SC Stay-at-Home Mom Carly Douglas, Wife and Mother of Three, Dies After Battle With Stage 4 Gastric Cancer

Carly Douglas, a young stay-at-home mother from the Greer, South Carolina area, passed away after a short but fierce battle with stage 4 gastric cancer.

Her mother-in-law, Renita McKinley Douglas, confirmed the news through a Facebook post shared by family friend Mary Keller, who wrote that Carly had “entered her forever home” and that while their hearts were shattered, their hope remained.

Carly is survived by her husband, David, and their three young children. By all accounts from those who knew her, she was someone who lit up every room she entered and made a lasting impression on everyone around her.

The GiveSendGo fundraiser set up in her honor described her as

“joy personified, full of life, love, and a steady kindness that you feel the moment you’re around her.”

The cancer diagnosis came suddenly and without warning. Within weeks of showing symptoms, Carly received the devastating stage 4 diagnosis, and her family and close community immediately closed ranks around her and David.

Her brother Corey Schuerman shared the news publicly on Facebook early in her illness, asking friends and strangers alike to pray for a miracle, referencing Acts 12 and calling on God as Jehovah-Rapha, the Lord Who Heals.

An Outpouring of Love From Near and Far

From the moment word spread, the response was remarkable. A GiveSendGo fundraiser was created under the name “Fight Like Carly,” with a goal of $100,000 to help offset the enormous financial burden of treatment, cover day-to-day household needs, and ensure that money would never stand in the way of any treatment option that might improve her chances.

David had stepped away from work to be present with Carly during her illness, creating additional financial strain on the family.

Donations poured in from friends, church community members, and strangers who had heard Carly’s story online.

One donor wrote that she did not know Carly personally but felt moved by her story. Another anonymous donor, giving just hours before Carly’s passing, wrote with certainty that she was with Jesus and offered prayers of comfort to the family.

Alongside the fundraiser, a Meal Train was organized by family friends Kellie and Brock Frisbee to ensure David and the children were being fed and cared for practically. Over 130 participants signed up, with meals scheduled through July 2026. The calendar is filled.

When Carly was hospitalized, meals were rerouted to the home of David’s parents, Barry and Renita Douglas, where the three children were staying.

Following Carly’s passing, the organizer updated the train to direct all meals back to David’s home, asking the community to continue showing up for the grieving family.

The hashtags FightLikeCarly and LiveLikeCarly have since circulated across social media as a tribute to how she carried herself through an impossible season. Those who knew her say she faced her illness with grace, faith, and unwavering love for her family and her God.

For those wishing to continue supporting the Douglas family, the GiveSendGo fundraiser remains active at givesendgo.com/carlydouglas.
