Tom Bean High School Grad, Makynna Eden Tumlinson, 18, Dies After Chevrolet Cruz Rear-Ends Commercial Truck on SH-11 in Grayson County
A small Texas community is grieving the sudden loss of a young woman whose life ended just days after she crossed the stage at Tom Bean High School.
Makynna Eden Tumlinson, 18, of Sherman, was killed Wednesday afternoon when her vehicle rear-ended a commercial truck on State Highway 11 in Grayson County.
The crash happened at approximately 3:44 p.m. on June 3 near McGraw Lane. According to the Texas Department of Public Safety, Tumlinson was driving a Chevrolet Cruz northbound on SH-11 when she failed to control her speed and struck the rear of a 2007 International truck traveling in the same direction.
Both vehicles came to rest in the northbound lane. Tumlinson was pronounced dead at the scene. The truck’s driver, 37-year-old Hector Ivan Mejia Garcia of Allen, was transported to a nearby hospital with suspected minor injuries.
Tumlinson was born on April 29, 2008, and had recently graduated from Tom Bean High School, a milestone that her family, friends, and community had celebrated just weeks before tragedy struck. She was 18 years old.
A Community Left in Shock and Sorrow
The news traveled quickly through Sherman and the surrounding area, leaving people who knew Makynna struggling to process the loss.
Tom Bean High School held a remembrance gathering at the school gymnasium on the morning of June 4, just hours after the crash was reported. Students, faculty, and members of the community came together to share memories of a young woman described by those close to her as kind, energetic, and full of life.
Friends and classmates remembered her warmth and the way she could light up a room simply by walking into it. For many of her peers, the grief is tangled with disbelief. Graduating from high school carries the promise of what comes next, and for Makynna, that future was taken before it could begin.
Memorials and tributes have since spread across Sherman, with the community rallying to keep her memory alive. Scholarships and other lasting honors are being discussed as ways to ensure that her spirit continues to inspire others long after her passing.
Investigation Ongoing as Family Prepares to Say Goodbye
The Texas Department of Public Safety confirmed that the crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not released additional details about what may have caused Tumlinson to lose control of her vehicle, and the full circumstances surrounding the collision have not yet been determined. No charges have been reported at this time.
Funeral arrangements have been made through Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman. A visitation will be held on June 8 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home located at 619 N. Travis Street.
A funeral service will follow on June 9, beginning at 11 a.m. at Community Bible Fellowship Church, 415 South Collins Freeway in Howe, Texas.
Makynna Eden Tumlinson is remembered not only for who she was but for the future she deserved. Her loss is a painful reminder of how quickly life can change, and how deeply one young person can touch an entire community in just 18 years.
