Wrong Car, Wrong Guy: NY Giants WR Malik Nabers Cleared After New Jersey Police Stop Goes Viral
New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers gave fans a brief scare on Tuesday night after a video circulated on social media showing him standing outside his vehicle while speaking with multiple police officers in Paramus, New Jersey.
The footage quickly spread across platforms, with many fans jumping to conclusions that their star receiver was in serious legal trouble. Fortunately, the situation turned out to be far less alarming than it appeared.
What Actually Happened on Tuesday Night
According to NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo, Nabers was pulled over by Paramus police after a separate individual driving a similar vehicle had reportedly been involved in a road rage incident.
That person was alleged to have brandished a gun, prompting law enforcement to stop any matching vehicles in the area. Nabers, who drives a black Tesla Cybertruck, fit the description closely enough that officers approached him and conducted a full search of his car.
After speaking with Nabers and completing the search, police found no weapon and had no grounds to hold him. He was never arrested, never cited, and was sent on his way without incident.
ESPN’s Jordan Raanan confirmed the report through his own sources, describing it plainly as a case of mistaken identity. Once officers confirmed Nabers was not the individual they were looking for, the encounter wrapped up quickly.
The original Reddit post that stoked much of the panic was later deleted by whoever posted it, but screenshots and stills from the video had already made enough rounds to get Giants fans worked up well before the truth came out.
Giants Already Have Enough to Worry About This Offseason
For a franchise that has had no shortage of headlines lately, this was the last kind of story the Giants needed. Between quarterback Jaxson Dart’s appearance at a Donald Trump rally, stirring controversy, and the team bringing back Odell Beckham Jr., the Giants have been a constant topic of conversation heading into the 2026 season.
The bigger and more legitimate concern surrounding Nabers remains his health. The second-year receiver is still recovering from a torn ACL he suffered back on September 28 of last season.
His rehab has not been without complications either. Reports emerged earlier this offseason that Nabers underwent a second surgery to remove scar tissue that was causing stiffness in the knee. That procedure was described as a cleanup and was not expected to push back his recovery timeline in a significant way.
Still, there is real uncertainty about when he will be ready to play. Head coach John Harbaugh has acknowledged it is not a simple injury and said the team does not yet know exactly when Nabers will be cleared for full football activity.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported that the hope internally is for Nabers to be healthy enough to play in Week 1 against the Dallas Cowboys, but even that outcome is far from guaranteed.
The Giants have reportedly discussed adding another receiver as a contingency, with Beckham’s recent signing already reflecting that mindset.
Despite all the noise, Nabers remains one of the most talented young receivers in the league. He showed that clearly in his rookie season before the injury cut things short. Giants fans have every reason to stay patient and let his recovery run its course.
As for Tuesday night’s police encounter, there is nothing more to it than an unfortunate case of wrong place, wrong time.
Nabers walked away without so much as a parking ticket, and the attention will quickly shift back to the real storyline worth following: whether he can get back on the field healthy and pick up where he left off.
