Electronic signs, new playground equipment among latest improvements for Midland schools

MIDLAND, Mich. — New electronic signage will greet some elementary students in Midland when they return to school this year.

The Midland Public Schools board of education unanimously voted on Monday to approve a bid totaling $208,340 for the completion of the electronic signs for five elementary schools in the district.

Adams, Chestnut Hill, Plymouth, Siebert, and Woodcrest Elementary are the listed schools that are getting an electronic sign installed because they don’t already have one.

Northville-based Volk Corporation will get $182,860 for the signs, while Master Electric from Gladwin will get $25,480 for electrical work.

The new electronic signs are part of the 2015 bond projects, and are using Series 2 bond funds. Voters approved a 2.95-mill bond proposal in 2015, which has funded major infrastructure improvements at the school district.

Superintendent Michael Sharrow told the City Paper that work will start in August, and the signs will be completed before the next school year begins.

The board also approved the purchase of new playground equipment for Siebert Elementary, which includes a play structure and swing set, funded as a capital project. $40,000 will go to Holland-based Sinclair Recreation, the low bidder, for installation of the equipment.
