Greene Leads Sheriff 2020 Campaign Fundraising

MIDLAND, Mich. — Midland County Sheriff deputy Myron Greene leads the race so far when it comes to fundraising for the 2020 Midland County Sheriff G.O.P. primary. Mr. Greene’s campaign has raised $21,315 so far, according to a July campaign finance filing with the Midland County Clerk’s office.

That amount includes an $8,000 loan from Mr. Greene himself. Of the total, the campaign has spent just over $4,500 on items such as event sponsorships, postage, and website design.

Among Mr. Greene’s largest contributors are former Dow Chemical Chief Information Officer and the current owner of Midland Brewing Company, David Kepler; Matt Davis, former president of Dow Chemical North America and Senior Vice President of global corporate affairs; and Dr. Jonathan Horbal, a local allergist-immunologist. Each contributed $1,000.

In second place, Midland County Law Enforcement Center administrative professional Laura Lee’s campaign raised $11,960. Ms. Lee’s campaign spent just over $4,100 during the reporting period.

Ms. Lee’s campaign was also assessed a $500 fee for filing its report late. Ms. Lee’s campaign treasurer, Scott Haines, told the City Paper that he takes full responsibility for the oversight.

“As the Treasurer for the campaign, I take full responsibility for the late filing of the July Quarterly report. When it was brought to my attention by a person associated with one of the other campaigns that a report was due, it was immediately filed with the County Clerk the very next day,” he said. “In accordance with Election Law, the assessed fee will be paid.”

Former Midland Deputy Police Chief Rodney L. Roten’s campaign raised just over $1,000 from three individuals for the reporting period. One of those individuals was Mr. Roten himself, loaning the campaign $272. His campaign reported expenditures of just $94.14.

Art Beagle, who is also running for Sheriff, did not file a campaign finance report. Campaigns that do not raise over $1,000 are not required to file.
