T.G.I.S. Star Red Sternberg Passes Away at 50

It’s a sad time for fans of 90s Filipino teen show T.G.I.S. as news spreads about the passing of Red Sternberg, who was lovingly known as Kiko on the hit show. Red’s wife, Sandy Sternberg, broke the news on Facebook this Friday, sharing how heartbreaking it’s been for her and their children.

What’s even more heartbreaking is the timing. Sandy shared that May was always a special month for their family, full of birthdays. In her words, “May was our month! 5th, 28th, 29th and 30th.” But instead of celebrating Red’s birthday on May 30, she was mourning. He passed away on Tuesday, May 27th, just days before he would’ve turned 51 years old.

“To those who knew him from his early acting days, he was ‘Kiko,’ but to our three kids and I, he was simply Daddy/Dada,” Sandy wrote. That sentence alone hit me right in the gut. It’s one thing to lose a public figure, but it’s another to feel the pain of a family losing their husband and dad. It just makes it all so real.

Sandy also asked for privacy and prayers as their family grieves. And seriously, if you’ve ever lost someone close, you know how much that space means. It’s never easy, especially when the world wants answers and updates.

Mark Reyes, the director of T.G.I.S., also posted a touching message on social media. “The entire T.G.I.S Barkada is heart broken to lose one of our own,” he said. He ended the post with a simple but powerful message: “Kiko we love you and we’re giving you a group hug right now.”

He also tagged fellow T.G.I.S. cast members like Angelu De Leon, Bobby Andrews, Michael John Flores, Rica Peralejo, and Ciara Sotto. It’s clear this wasn’t just a show. It was a family. And Red Sternberg was a big part of that.

For fans in the U.S., this might feel like when we lost someone like Dustin Diamond from Saved by the Bell. You didn’t have to know him personally to feel like a piece of your teen years just disappeared. Red wasn’t just a character. He was someone who made us laugh, made us think, and made us feel like we were part of the gang.

Red Sternberg might have been best known as Kiko, but to his loved ones, he was a dad, a husband, and the heart of their home. He’ll be missed by many, both in the Philippines and by fans abroad who still remember those fun T.G.I.S. days.
