Oxford, CT Firefighter, Zak McKeon, Passes Away In Branford Motorcycle Crash, Leaves Behind Wife Gabriela
The Quaker Farms Fire Company is mourning the loss of one of its newest members after Zak McKeon was killed in a motorcycle accident in Branford.
The fire company announced his passing in a heartfelt post, describing the loss as one felt deeply across the entire Oxford Fire Department family.
McKeon had only recently joined the Quaker Farms Fire Company, having been voted in as a probationary member just last month in May.
Despite his short time with the company, those who served alongside him say he made an immediate impression with his enthusiasm and work ethic. He leaves behind his wife, Gabriela McKeon-Cruz, whom he married on December 10, 2020.
A Promising Member Taken Too Soon
In their announcement, the fire company described McKeon as someone who was always eager to learn and never hesitated to jump in wherever he was needed.
He was described as extremely excited about his new role and deeply active in his short time with the department. Fellow members say he was well on his way to becoming an incredible asset not just to Quaker Farms but to the Oxford Fire Department as a whole.
His neighbor, Duncan MacIntyre, also shared a tribute on social media, remembering McKeon as a friendly and always-helpful presence next door.
MacIntyre confirmed that McKeon was killed in the motorcycle accident in Branford and wrote that life in the neighborhood would never quite be the same. His post ended with a reminder to hug the people you love and always tell them how you feel.
Comments from friends and fellow community members poured in quickly after the announcement, with many expressing their condolences to McKeon’s wife and family.
Several people who knew him personally referred to him as a brother, reflecting just how wide a circle of people he touched in his life.
Family Sets Up GoFundMe for Unexpected Expenses
McKeon’s family has set up a GoFundMe page to help cover the unexpected expenses that have come with his sudden passing.
The link, shared by the fire company in their announcement, is available at gofund.me/8d11ec2f3 for anyone who wishes to contribute and support the family during this difficult time.
The fire company closed their statement with a message that will stay with those who read it. They wrote that McKeon would be forever in their hearts and prayers, a sentiment echoed by the many people who took to social media to share their grief and their memories of a young man who clearly meant a great deal to everyone around him.
McKeon’s death is a reminder of just how quickly life can change and how important it is to hold close the people who matter most.
The Quaker Farms Fire Company, like all volunteer fire departments, is a tight-knit family bound together by a shared commitment to serving their community. Losing a member, especially one so new and so full of promise, is a wound that takes a long time to heal.
The community of Oxford, Connecticut continues to mourn alongside his wife Gabriela and everyone who loved Zak McKeon. He was young, willing, and ready to give back, and his memory will carry on through the department he was so proud to join.
