Fletcher Reveals She Fell in Love with a Man in New Song “Boy”
Fletcher is opening a new chapter of her love story, and it’s one fans didn’t see coming. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the 31-year-old singer got candid about the inspiration behind her new song “Boy” and shared a deeply personal update: she fell in love with a man. For an artist who’s become a voice for many in the queer community, the news caught some fans off guard—but no one more than Fletcher herself.
“Boy” Tells a New Story, But the Message Stays the Same
Fletcher has always written from the heart. Whether she was singing about heartbreak, longing, or self-discovery, her music has stayed rooted in personal experience. Her new track “Boy,” featured on her upcoming album Would You Still Love Me If You Really Knew Me?, is no different.
In the song, she reflects on falling for someone unexpected—a man—and how that experience made her question everything. “Girl, I had questions and I was confused too,” she told Rolling Stone. “It shocked me just as much as anybody else.”
But she’s not abandoning her identity. Fletcher emphasized that she’s still proudly queer and views this moment as part of her larger journey. “Being queer for me is this lens that I get to view life through,” she said.
She’s Still Exploring Love, and That’s the Point
While Fletcher didn’t confirm if she’s still in a relationship with the man who inspired the song, she did share that she’s feeling love again. “That is the most magical feeling in the entire world,” she said. “I met a boy who is somehow way more connected to his feelings and his emotions and his heart than even I am.”
For Fletcher, “Boy” isn’t about changing her identity. It’s about allowing space for honest exploration, even when it doesn’t fit into neat categories. “It’s just another love story,” she said. “It’s not an album about a guy. It’s an album about revelations.”
Her Queerness Is Not Up for Debate
Despite the questions that may arise, Fletcher made it clear that her queerness is something that hasn’t changed. “I’m so proud to be queer,” she said. “That is not something that has ever wavered or changed.” Instead, she hopes people understand this new song as a moment of vulnerability and truth, part of the same honest storytelling that’s defined her music from the start.
Lyme Disease Shifted Her Entire Perspective
Fletcher also shared that her recent experience with Lyme disease played a role in how she’s been processing everything. Diagnosed in early 2023, she went through what she described as a “really intense healing journey.” That period of pause gave her the space to ask deeper questions about who she was, what she wanted, and what dreams she’d been chasing.
Through that reflection, something shifted. “My heart opened in a way I wasn’t expecting,” she said, “and I fell in love with a boy.”
The New Album Drops July 18
Her third studio album, Would You Still Love Me If You Really Knew Me?, arrives July 18 and promises to be Fletcher’s most personal project yet. The album title itself hints at themes of self-discovery and identity. With “Boy” already sparking conversation, it’s clear Fletcher’s ready to share parts of herself that even she’s still learning to understand.
Through it all, Fletcher continues to do what she does best—putting her truth into her music and inviting fans to feel it with her.
