Did Shedeur Sanders Get Drafted? Who Is Shedeur Sanders?
The 2024 NFL Draft had fans watching closely, especially Colorado Buffaloes fans. Many were waiting to see where quarterback Shedeur Sanders would go. Would he be a first-round pick? Would he join a top NFL team? As the night went on, people waited, but Shedeur Sanders’ name was never called.
So, did Shedeur Sanders get drafted? The short answer is no, not in the first round. Let’s take a closer look at what happened and why.
Who Is Shedeur Sanders?
Shedeur Sanders is a 23-year-old quarterback who played college football for the Colorado Buffaloes. He is also the son of NFL legend Deion Sanders, who is now the head coach of the Buffaloes.
Shedeur started his college career at Jackson State, a historically Black college. He played under his father there too. After two seasons, both father and son moved to Colorado. The team had only won one game before they arrived. But with Shedeur leading the offense, things started to change. In his second season, the Buffaloes won nine games, their best record since 2016.
Shedeur Sanders’ Stats and Awards
In his final college season, Shedeur had some great stats:
- Completed 74.0% of his passes
- Threw for 37 touchdowns
- Only 10 interceptions
- Named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year
Those are impressive numbers for any quarterback. Many fans and sports writers thought he would be picked in the first round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Draft Night Surprise: No Selection in Round 1
Leading up to the draft, many mock drafts showed Shedeur Sanders going in the first round, possibly to the Pittsburgh Steelers with the 21st pick. Some even said he could go as high as third overall.
But that didn’t happen.
Instead, the Steelers picked Derrick Harmon, a defensive tackle from Oregon. After the No. 1 overall pick Cam Ward, the only other quarterback selected in the first round was Jaxson Dart from Ole Miss. The New York Giants traded into the 25th pick to take him.
That left Shedeur undrafted at the end of Round 1.
Why Wasn’t Shedeur Drafted?
Several NFL coaches and scouts had concerns about Shedeur Sanders. Some of these were about his attitude. One quarterbacks coach called him “brash” and “arrogant.” Another coach told NFL Network that Shedeur gave “the worst formal interview” he had ever seen.
Other concerns were about his play on the field. Critics pointed out:
- He took 94 sacks in two years at Colorado
- He sometimes held the ball too long
- He had weak body language
- He was blamed for not playing on time
One assistant even said, “He blames teammates… but the biggest thing is, he’s not that good.”
However, others still praised him. They said he has:
- Great accuracy (over 70% completion rate for two years)
- Strong leadership skills
- A calm mindset under pressure
How Did Shedeur Respond?
Shedeur Sanders hasn’t let the negativity bother him. In an interview with NBC News, he said:
“I truly don’t have any space for negativity, so it doesn’t play a factor in my life at all.”
He also added:
“I like a lot of chaos, because it shows you who’s really there. I wouldn’t change a thing, because this adds to the story.”
Clearly, Shedeur is focused on staying positive, no matter what others say.
