Brent Hinds, Former Mastodon Frontman and Guitarist, Dies in Motorcycle Accident at 51
Brent Hinds, the former frontman and lead guitarist of the Atlanta heavy metal band Mastodon, died late Wednesday night in a motorcycle crash, authorities confirmed. He was 51.
According to the Atlanta Police Department, Hinds was riding a Harley-Davidson when the accident occurred around 11:35 p.m., less than two miles from downtown Atlanta. He was found unresponsive at the scene, and emergency medical workers pronounced him dead.
Police said the crash happened when a woman driving a BMW SUV failed to yield while making a left turn, colliding with Hinds’ motorcycle. An investigation into the accident is ongoing.
A Driving Force in Metal
Mastodon, formed in Atlanta in 2000, quickly rose to become one of the most influential and adventurous heavy metal bands of the 21st century. Known for blending the raw power of Metallica and Slayer with progressive rock and jazz-inspired rhythms, the band earned wide acclaim for pushing the boundaries of the genre.
In 2009, Rolling Stone hailed them as “America’s new kings of metal.”
Hinds, a founding member, not only played lead guitar but was also one of the group’s three vocalists. He parted ways with the band in March under disputed circumstances. While the band said the decision was mutual, Hinds later claimed he had been forced out.
A Legacy of Music and Vision
Mastodon’s breakthrough second album, Leviathan (2004), was a concept record inspired by Herman Melville’s classic novel Moby-Dick. With fierce guitar riffs from Hinds and Bill Kelliher, and lyrics channeling Captain Ahab’s obsession with the white whale, the album cemented Mastodon’s reputation as one of the most ambitious bands in metal.
Reflecting on its meaning in a 2006 interview with The New York Times, Hinds described Leviathan as “the struggle between man and music,” comparing a band’s endless grind on tour to sailors chasing an unattainable quest at sea.
Early Life and Family
William Brent Hinds was born on January 16, 1974, in Birmingham, Alabama. He is survived by his parents, Dean Campbell and Billy Hinds. His brother, Bradley Ray Hinds, died in 2010. Further details about his survivors have not been made public.
Hinds leaves behind not only a powerful musical legacy but also a generation of fans and musicians inspired by his creativity and relentless energy on stage.
