Bedford Teen Eugene “EJ” Wilkerson, 15, Drowns at Aurora Quarry Lake After Two-Hour Search

A 15-year-old boy from Bedford is dead after drowning at Quarry Lake in Aurora, Ohio, on Thursday afternoon, leaving his family and a tight-knit community in mourning.

Eugene “EJ” Wilkerson was identified as the victim. Emergency crews from the Aurora Fire Department and Portage County Water Rescue Team responded to the 300 block of Treat Road shortly after 4 p.m. following a 911 call reporting a teenager struggling in the water.

What followed was a grueling two-hour search beneath the surface of the lake before rescue workers finally located his body at approximately 6:15 p.m., roughly ten feet underwater and just twenty-five feet from shore.

Despite immediate response from trained emergency personnel, EJ was pronounced dead at the scene. The Portage County investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death remains open as officials work to piece together what exactly happened in those final moments before he went under.

The tragedy unfolded on what seemed like an ordinary Thursday. By all accounts, EJ was a teenager simply spending time near the water when things went horribly wrong.

The murky conditions of the quarry lake made the search extraordinarily difficult for divers and rescue teams who combed the dark water for well over two hours before recovering his body.

A Community Pours Out Grief for a Young Life Cut Short

News of EJ’s passing spread rapidly across social media, drawing an outpouring of condolences from Cleveland-area residents and people who knew him personally.

Comments flooded a memorial post shared by the Cleveland Remembrance Page on Instagram, which accumulated over 12,000 likes within hours.

One commenter who described a personal connection wrote that EJ was a very bright and funny kid and an amazing friend to her family, asking for prayers to be sent to his loved ones. Others left strings of prayer hands and dove emojis, the kind of quiet digital grief that has become familiar whenever a young person is taken too soon.

One commenter simply wrote the word Jesus, a single-word reaction that somehow captured the disbelief that so many people felt reading the news.

Quarry lakes carry a well-documented history of dangerous swimming conditions. Unlike public pools or guarded beaches, these bodies of water are often cold, deep, and visually impenetrable even a few feet below the surface. The sudden drop in temperature and the lack of visibility can disorient even strong swimmers within seconds, making recovery operations a serious challenge for even the most experienced water rescue teams.

EJ Wilkerson was fifteen years old. He had people who called him bright, funny, and a good friend. His mother and family are left to carry a weight no parent should ever have to hold.

The investigation by Portage County authorities continues. Anyone with information about the incident is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
