Kirsten Dunst Wants a Role in ‘Minecraft’ Sequel: “Maybe I Can Just Make a Movie Where I Don’t Lose Money”

Kirsten Dunst is eyeing Hollywood’s next big blockbuster — and she’s not shy about saying why. The Oscar-nominated actress, 43, admitted that she’d love to join the sequel to A Minecraft Movie after the video game adaptation smashed records at the box office this summer.

“Maybe I can just make a movie where I don’t lose money,” Dunst joked in an interview with Town & Country.

Sons Are Big Fans

Dunst revealed that her sons Ennis, 7, and James, 4 — whom she shares with husband and fellow actor Jesse Plemons — were huge fans of the first live-action Minecraft film. Their excitement has made her even more open to appearing in the planned sequel. While she didn’t specify the kind of role she’d like to play, her comments have already sparked curiosity among fans.

A Packed Resume

The actress has plenty of experience in action and fantasy films, from Jumanji (1995) to Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man trilogy in the 2000s, and most recently Alex Garland’s Civil War. She also stars in the upcoming drama Roofman alongside Channing Tatum and Peter Dinklage, though she noted that the project was not made on a big budget.

Since 2020, Dunst has only appeared in two films, explaining that she prefers waiting for projects where she connects deeply with the director’s vision.

Sequel Already in the Works

Warner Bros. Pictures co-chairmen and CEOs Mike De Luca and Pam Abdy confirmed earlier this year that a Minecraft sequel was being developed “imminently.” Speaking to Deadline in April 2025, De Luca acknowledged that while deals were still being finalized, the creative process was already in motion.

“The project was here for 12 years and had trouble getting made,” he said. “I think Pam and I did our jobs well, recognizing that it should be fast-tracked.” He credited Jesse Ehrman, the studio’s President of Production and Development, for keeping the project alive through multiple leadership changes.

Returning Cast?

Jason Momoa, who led the first film as Garett Garrison alongside Jack Black, told Extra in March that he’d be open to returning for the sequel. Joking about possible titles, he said: “We’ll call it Another Minecraft Movie and then we’ll call it And Another Minecraft Movie.”

With the first film already the highest-grossing domestic release of 2025, all eyes are now on Warner Bros. to see how quickly the sequel comes together — and whether Kirsten Dunst will land her shot at the green prize.
