‘Five Nights at Freddy’s 2’ Promises Bigger Scares with Mangle and The Marionette

The highly anticipated sequel to the 2023 horror hit Five Nights at Freddy’s is turning up the terror. During Universal Pictures and Blumhouse’s Hall H panel at San Diego Comic-Con, director Emma Tammi and the cast teased what’s to come in Five Nights at Freddy’s 2, including a massive lineup of animatronics and the return of some beloved fan-favorites.

What’s New in the Sequel?

Emma Tammi, who directed the first movie, revealed that this time fans can expect “more than three times as many animatronics” compared to the original film. She emphasized the team’s collaboration with the Jim Henson Company, known for their mastery in practical effects. “We wanted the animatronics to feel and move as real as possible,” Tammi said, noting that using practical effects over CGI preserves the nostalgic vibe that fans of the video game series love.

Game creator Scott Cawthon has returned as the screenwriter, ensuring that the sequel remains true to its roots. The film will bring back Josh Hutcherson, Matthew Lillard, Elizabeth Lail, and Piper Rubio. New faces joining the cast include Freddy Carter, Wayne Knight, Mckenna Grace, Teo Briones, Theodus Crane, and Skeet Ulrich, best known for his role alongside Lillard in Scream.

Which Animatronics Are Making a Comeback?

One of the biggest announcements came from Hutcherson, who confirmed that fan-favorite animatronic Mangle will appear in the sequel. Mangle, a twisted and damaged version of Funtime Foxy, has been a long-requested character for fans of the game franchise. Another exciting addition is The Marionette, who makes a chilling appearance in a clip shown exclusively to Comic-Con attendees.

The panel also revealed a few details about the characters. Briones described his role as a videographer for a paranormal web series, while Crane hinted that his character is suspicious of Mike and Vanessa’s growing connection. Hutcherson shared that Mike is trying to rebuild his life with Abby but continues to battle trauma from the first movie. “He just wants a normal life, but that can’t happen in FNAF,” Hutcherson said with a laugh.

Why Are Fans Excited?

The first Five Nights at Freddy’s movie became Blumhouse’s highest-grossing film ever, raking in $297 million globally despite debuting simultaneously on Peacock. With that success, expectations for the sequel are high.

While Matthew Lillard couldn’t attend the panel in person, he sent a video message encouraging fans to support the movie so a third installment could happen. “If it’s a hit, they’re going to make a third movie. And then I get to kill Mike Schmidt!” Lillard joked. His Scream co-star Skeet Ulrich, who will appear in the film, hinted that his character has a mysterious past and deep ties to the story but declined to give further details.

When Is the Release Date?

Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 is set to hit theaters on December 5. Produced by Blumhouse founder Jason Blum and Scott Cawthon, with Emma Tammi and other notable names as executive producers, the movie promises to be even darker, creepier, and more immersive than its predecessor.

With its expanded animatronic lineup, practical effects by the Jim Henson team, and returning cast members, the sequel is shaping up to be a horror event that fans won’t want to miss.
