Dragon Age: The Veilguard Wins Game of the Year 2025

Dragon Age: The Veilguard pulled off something big. This new chapter in BioWare’s fantasy saga just won Game of the Year at the Gayming Awards 2025. Not everyone saw that coming.

Fans have been split since launch. But the judges made their pick clear.

Why Did Veilguard Stir So Much Drama?

This game took forever. Nearly ten years in the oven. When it dropped in 2024, players lined up fast. But the numbers didn’t reach EA’s big goals. About 1.5 million played in the first quarter. Not bad. But EA wanted double that.

Some old-school Dragon Age lovers didn’t hold back. They felt Veilguard rewrote too much of their beloved lore. The world was different. Characters were different. Some called it bold. Others called it too “woke.” A chunk of angry folks even tried review bombing it. They blasted the story, the LGBTQ+ angles, and the new style of writing.

Yet critics mostly liked it. Big media gave it good scores. Some loved Rook, the main character. Some praised the risky narrative. The Veilguard gave players freedom to shape Rook’s gender and love life. And it had non-binary heroes like Taash. In the Gayming Awards, that mattered.

What Other Awards Did Veilguard Win?

The Gayming Awards didn’t just stop at Game of the Year. Veilguard’s Rook snagged Best LGBTQ+ Character. Erika Ishii, who voiced one version of Rook, got Best LGBTQ+ Voice Actor of the Year too.

Earlier, the game only grabbed one trophy at the GLAAD Media Awards for Outstanding Video Game. Its podcast, Dragon Age: Vows & Vengeance, did win Best Audio/Podcast at Tribeca.

So, it may not have ruled the sales charts, but the award shelf is filling up.

Players still argue online. Some say BioWare pushed too far with LGBTQ+ plots. Others say that’s what made it stand out. This award backs the second camp.

Now fans wonder if there’s more Veilguard coming. Truth is, not likely soon. BioWare’s been hit with layoffs. Many of the team are gone or moved to other EA projects. Corinne Busche, the director, left too. She’s now with Skeleton Key Studio, working on something secret for Wizards of the Coast.

For now, BioWare is heads-down on the next Mass Effect. Nobody knows when that’ll drop.

Veilguard’s story is a wild ride. A game that split fans, fell short in sales, and still walked away with Game of the Year. That’s Dragon Age for you — never boring.
