Joe Burrow Injury Update: Bengals QB Exits with Turf Toe in Week 2 Win

The Cincinnati Bengals may have secured a strong 2-0 start to the 2025 NFL season with their Sunday win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, but celebrations were cut short when star quarterback Joe Burrow went down with a left foot injury. For a franchise with Super Bowl aspirations, the early-season momentum might come at a heavy cost.

Bengals Beat Jaguars but Lose Their Star

On the scoreboard, things looked great for Cincinnati. They defeated the Jaguars in a hard-fought game, marking the first time since 2018 that they’ve opened a season with back-to-back wins. However, the atmosphere shifted dramatically late in the second quarter when Burrow was sacked by Jaguars defensive end Arik Armstead. As he went down, several defenders landed on top of him, causing immediate concern on the Bengals sideline.

Burrow struggled to get up and couldn’t walk off the field on his own. Trainers helped him to the locker room, and he never returned to the field.

Toe Injury Forces Joe Burrow Out Mid-Game

Initial reports listed Burrow as “questionable to return,” but that designation was quickly upgraded to “out.” After the game, he was seen wearing a walking boot and using crutches. The Bengals organization hasn’t offered a formal medical diagnosis yet, but insiders told ESPN’s Adam Schefter that Burrow is believed to have suffered a turf toe injury on his left foot.

The fact that foot specialist Dr. Robert Anderson has already been consulted adds to the growing concern that this could be more than a minor setback.

Will Joe Burrow Need Surgery?

At this stage, surgery has not been confirmed, but it’s on the table. If it becomes necessary, Burrow could be out for up to three months. That would sideline him until around Week 16 or 17, effectively removing him from most of the regular season. Such an absence could derail Cincinnati’s playoff seeding hopes or even their playoff chances altogether.

The team’s medical staff is expected to conduct more evaluations before making a final decision, but time is already becoming a factor with Week 3 approaching fast.

Jake Browning Steps In

When Burrow exited, backup QB Jake Browning was called into action. He delivered a steady, controlled performance that kept the Bengals on top and guided them to a crucial win. While Browning’s play was encouraging, he’s unproven over a full stretch of games, especially under the pressure of leading a playoff-caliber team.

If Burrow does end up missing multiple weeks, Browning’s consistency will be put to the test. The Bengals coaching staff may also need to adjust the offense to better suit his strengths and simplify the game plan.

What This Means for the Bengals’ Season

Cincinnati came into this season with Super Bowl ambitions. Burrow was supposed to be at the heart of that push. A long-term absence now shifts the entire narrative. The defense has been strong, and the offensive line is improved, but without Burrow, the ceiling may drop considerably.

Their next few games are tough, including a Week 3 clash with the Minnesota Vikings. That matchup will be especially telling if Burrow is out and Browning gets the start. If the Bengals can survive the next month with a positive record, Burrow’s late-season return could still spark a playoff run.

No Official Timeline Yet

As of now, there is no official timetable for Burrow’s return. Head coach Zac Taylor declined to give a definitive update post-game, noting that “they’re still evaluating everything.” Expect more concrete information in the coming days as test results and medical opinions become clearer.
