Patriots Coach Mike Vrabel Responds to Stefon Diggs’ Viral Yacht Video Controversy

When the New England Patriots signed Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $69 million deal this March, fans expected fireworks — the good kind. After years of lacking a true number-one receiver, this felt like a turning point. A fresh chapter with a proven star. But if the last few days are any indication, things aren’t starting off how anyone had hoped.

Earlier this week, a video of Diggs on a yacht went viral. In it, he appears to hand a pink baggie to a woman. The clip is short and lacks context, but that didn’t stop it from spreading like wildfire online. And of course, when you’re a high-profile athlete, anything that even hints at controversy is going to raise eyebrows fast.

Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel didn’t dodge the topic during his Wednesday press conference. He confirmed that he’d spoken with Diggs and that the team is “aware of the situation.” Still, Vrabel kept his words measured, choosing not to go into specifics. He emphasized the importance of making “great decisions on and off the field.”

Is This the First Crack in the Foundation?

Diggs didn’t show up to Wednesday’s OTA, which, while technically voluntary, still felt like a statement. Especially since this was the first session open to the media. With expectations high, his absence only fueled the chatter. It’s not just about a missed workout. It’s about optics.

This is a player expected to help shape the Patriots’ identity moving forward, especially for a young quarterback like Drake Maye. After all, Diggs was brought in to anchor a receiving corps that’s been searching for consistency since Julian Edelman’s heyday. His veteran presence, route-running, and big-play ability were supposed to bring instant credibility.

Need Stability? The Patriots Sure Do

But right now, stability is in short supply. The wide receiver room is a puzzle. Ja’Lynn Polk and Javon Baker haven’t yet gotten fully involved. Mack Hollins is nursing his own issues. Trade rumors are swirling around Kendrick Bourne and Kayshon Boutte. Diggs was supposed to be the glue — the guy who walks in and sets the tone.

Yet here we are, talking more about yacht videos than playbooks.

Stay Focused, Stefon. New England Is Watching

There’s no denying Diggs’ talent. Even after an ACL tear last season and a 19-game drought without a 100-yard performance, he’s still a dangerous receiver when locked in. But the “when” is becoming the question. His track record from Buffalo and Houston shows that off-field drama can follow him, and this latest episode isn’t helping change that perception.

Vrabel is known for demanding discipline and setting a culture that doesn’t tolerate distractions. If Diggs wants to be the face of this offense, the tone he sets now matters. The Patriots gave him the contract. Now they need him to show up — in every sense of the word.

The ball’s in his court. Or maybe, more appropriately, on his practice field.
