Young Charleston FX Makeup Artist Zoë Hyman, 25, Passes; Organ Donation Leaves Lasting Impact

Zoë Hyman was not the kind of person you forgot easily. Born three months premature, weighing just 1 pound 7 ounces and measuring 11 inches long, she arrived in this world defying the odds from her very first breath. She left it the same way she lived, having made an impression that was impossible to ignore.

The Charleston, South Carolina native grew up to become a self-taught special effects makeup artist with a love for the strange, the beautiful, and the wonderfully grotesque. Her greatest compliment, she once said, was when someone looked at her work and said, “Oh, gross.” To Zoë, that reaction meant she had done her job right.

She graduated from the School of the Arts and, by 18, had already begun building a portfolio that spoke for itself. She created elaborate masks, including a lizard woman, a cat, and an alien character inspired by the cult classic film Mars Attacks. Her work even appeared in local commercials, an early sign of the professional future she was clearly headed toward.

In a 2019 feature aired by WCBD News 2, Zoë sat in her living room and transformed reporter Carolyn Murray into a convincing skull in about an hour, chatting the whole time about her aspirations.

She wanted to work on Stephen King adaptations, Rob Zombie films, and fantasy productions featuring creatures that gave audiences that particular blend of wonder and unease.

“I would love to work in a Stephen King horror film or Rob Zombie horror film to create characters or bring other people’s fantasy to life,” she said at the time. “And also the fantasy of unicorns and creatures like avatars that are not human but give you that whimsical feeling inside.”

A Daughter, an Animal Advocate, and a Community Figure

Zoë came from a family rooted in compassion. Her mother, Kay Hyman, is a well-known animal advocate in the Charleston area and is connected to the Charleston Animal Society.

Growing up in a household that treated every living creature with care, Zoë carried that same spirit into her own life.

When news of her passing spread, tributes poured in from across the local rescue and arts communities. Friends of Berkeley County Animals described her as a shining star and a compassionate woman who touched countless lives in her 25 years.

The organization noted that she had chosen, in her final act, to donate her organs, extending and improving the lives of others even in death.

Reporter Carolyn Murray, who had interviewed Zoë years earlier, shared a moving tribute on social media, recalling the young woman who had transformed her face and her day in equal measure. Murray noted that the name Zoë means life, a fitting tribute to someone who seemed to embody that word in everything she did.

Her mother, Kay, and father, Phillip, had always believed in where Zoë was headed. Kay once said she looked forward to the day she would see her daughter’s name scroll across a movie screen.

That day never came. But Zoë’s name is being spoken now, and that counts for something too.
