Blanchester, OH Varsity Softball Player Szedi Roush, 16, Dies by Suicide; Family Launches Foundation in Her Honor

The Blanchester Local School District is grieving the devastating loss of one of its own. Szedi Roush, a high school student and varsity softball player who wore number 12 for the Blanchester Wildcats, passed away by suicide, leaving behind a community struggling to make sense of an unimaginable loss.

The district shared the heartbreaking news on its official Facebook page, and the response from friends, teammates, and neighbors made clear just how deeply Szedi was loved.

Szedi was not just a student in the hallways of Blanchester High School. She was an athlete on the diamond, a competitor who showed up for her team through the 2026 season. According to MaxPreps, she suited up for the Blanchester Varsity Girls Softball team and played through a season that stretched from late March through mid-May 2026.

She batted .263 with an on-base percentage of .462, well above the national average of .406, and contributed five hits, five RBIs, and seven runs across the season.

She also ranked 42nd in the Southern Buckeye AA National conference in stolen bases, finishing the season with three. Those numbers tell the story of a young woman who worked hard, competed with heart, and showed up for her teammates game after game.

Her final game came on May 15, 2026, when Blanchester fell to Madison Plains 7 to 12. Szedi went one for four at the plate that afternoon, not knowing it would be the last time she would take the field. Just weeks later, the community that cheered for her in the stands would be gathering not to celebrate a win but to mourn a loss far greater than any score on a board.

Friend Morgan Grose posted a tribute that captured the grief of those closest to her:

“R.I.H. my beautiful friend.” Community member Natalie Youd added, “So sad. Praying for the family and the entire community.”

These words, simple and raw, reflected the sorrow spreading across Blanchester in the hours following the school district’s announcement.

Counselors, Crisis Support, and a Foundation Built From Heartbreak

Blanchester Local School District responded quickly and compassionately, ensuring that students and staff would not have to carry their grief alone.

Counselors were made available at the high school on Monday, June 15, giving the community a place to gather, cry, and lean on one another. The district promised to share specific details about timing and location through its Facebook page.

For anyone in the wider community facing their own crisis, the district also directed people to the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline, available every hour of every day by simply calling or texting 988.

Out of the depths of their grief, Szedi’s family made a decision that speaks to the kind of people who raised her. They established The Szedi Roush Foundation, an organization built around bridging the gap between grief and healing for families experiencing loss. As the foundation itself stated, suicide does not just affect one person.

It reaches a family, a community, and the world. The foundation has launched both a Facebook page and a website where people can follow their mission and find support.

Szedi Roush was number 12 on the field and irreplaceable everywhere else. Her memory will live on through the foundation her family built in her name and through every person whose life she touched.

If you are struggling, please call or text 988. Help is there, and you are not alone.
