League City Man, Ted Cassell, 78, Under Investigation After Birthday Party Crash Leaves Guest Critically Injured
LEAGUE CITY, Texas — A 78-year-old Texas man is under investigation after a vehicle incident at a birthday celebration left another guest with life threatening injuries, raising questions about whether the collision was an accident or an intentional act.
The incident occurred on May 10, 2025, at a neighborhood park in League City where friends and family had gathered to celebrate the 95th birthday of a local resident known as Dub. Police officers responding to the scene found 72-year-old Donald Corvette Davis seriously injured after being struck by a Ford F-150 pickup truck.
Emergency responders treated Davis at the scene before transporting him to a hospital. According to information discussed during the investigation, he suffered severe injuries including a broken hip, a fractured femur, and significant damage to one of his hands.
The driver of the truck, Ted Cassell, remained at the scene and immediately acknowledged that he had been behind the wheel when the collision occurred.
Cassell told officers that his foot had slipped from the brake pedal, causing the truck to move forward unexpectedly. He also described previous incidents in which he claimed his foot had slipped from the brake while driving, resulting in other accidents.
Investigators learned that both Cassell and Davis had attended the birthday gathering. Witnesses reported that tensions developed after Cassell parked his truck on the grass near the party area. One local resident said he had warned Cassell that parking there could encourage others to do the same, but the warning was reportedly dismissed.
According to statements gathered by police, Davis later approached Cassell regarding the truck’s location. What happened next remains a key focus of the investigation.
During interviews with detectives, Cassell admitted that he became angry during the confrontation. He also acknowledged displaying a handgun while speaking with Davis, though he insisted he never intended to harm him. Cassell described himself as upset rather than fearful during the encounter.
Witness accounts presented investigators with conflicting versions of events. One witness, identified as Cassell’s companion Dennis, suggested that the truck initially moved slowly before suddenly accelerating.
Dennis stated that he did not believe the collision was deliberate and pointed to Cassell’s physical limitations, including mobility issues affecting his foot.
However, another witness provided information that raised additional concerns. According to statements made to investigators, Cassell had allegedly remarked that he was going to run Davis over with his truck. When questioned about the comment, Cassell admitted making the statement but claimed it had been intended as a joke and was not meant seriously.
Throughout the investigation, detectives continued examining physical evidence, witness testimony, and the circumstances leading up to the collision. The case remains under review as authorities work to determine whether the incident was a tragic accident or the result of intentional actions.
No final charging decisions had been announced at the time the information became public. Investigators continue to review all available evidence as the case moves forward.
