Bay Area, Ex-49ers Pass Rusher Aldon Smith Dies at 36, Leaves Behind Grieving Family
Former NFL defensive lineman Aldon Smith passed away on Saturday, June 13, in the Bay Area. He was 36 years old. The San Francisco 49ers confirmed the news through an official statement, though no cause of death has been released.
The football world is mourning one of the most talented pass rushers of his generation, a player whose gifts on the field were matched only by the turmoil that defined his life away from it.
Smith was born on September 25, 1989, in Kansas City, Missouri, and grew up to become a standout at the University of Missouri.
The 49ers selected him with the seventh overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, and from his very first season, it was clear San Francisco had found something special. As a rookie, Smith recorded 14 sacks and 27 quarterback hits, finishing second in Defensive Rookie of the Year voting. It was one of the finest debut seasons any defensive player had ever put together in the NFL.
The following year was even better. In 2012, Smith posted 19.5 sacks and 29 quarterback hits, earning both Pro Bowl and All-Pro honors.
That sack total remains a franchise record for the 49ers to this day. He also started in Super Bowl XLVII when San Francisco faced the Baltimore Ravens in February 2013. At just 23 years old, Smith looked destined for a Hall of Fame career.
Off-Field Troubles Derailed What Could Have Been a Historic Legacy
Unfortunately, the game never got to see the best of Aldon Smith for long. He accumulated 10 arrests over nine years, a staggering number that repeatedly pulled him away from football.
His troubles began with a DUI arrest in Miami in 2012, followed by another in San Jose in 2013 when he crashed his car into a tree. Later that same year, he was arrested on three felony charges related to illegal assault weapons.
The NFL suspended Smith for nine games in 2014 for violating its personal conduct and substance abuse policies. The 49ers released him in August 2015, the day after his third DUI-related arrest. He signed with the Oakland Raiders but was suspended again by the league just months later, keeping him out of football from 2016 through 2019.
He appeared in nine games with the Raiders in 2015 and was conditionally reinstated in 2020, playing all 16 games for the Dallas Cowboys that season and recording five sacks.
A brief stint with the Seattle Seahawks in 2021 ended quickly after another arrest, this time on a second-degree battery charge in Louisiana. In 2023, Smith told a podcast that he was officially done with football.
In his final chapter, Smith worked to rebuild his life and help others. He launched a mentorship program called “I.M. Loading,” short for Intelligent Movement, designed to support young athletes facing similar pressures. He also served as a mentor to rookie classes with the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders in 2024.
“I’m grateful for my journey so far because of where I am now,” Smith said in a June 2024 podcast appearance.
The 49ers expressed their grief simply but powerfully, remembering him for his infectious smile as much as his dominance on the field. He was 36 years old.
