Deadly Shooting in Midland, Texas Leaves One Dead, Nine Hospitalized
A shooting in Midland, Texas on Friday morning left at least one person dead and nine others hospitalized, with the suspect also confirmed dead by early afternoon, city officials announced.
Midland Mayor Lori Blong said emergency services received the first calls at 8:03 a.m. local time. Officers who arrived at the scene in the southwestern part of the city immediately heard gunfire coming from a building.
SWAT teams and multiple law enforcement agencies were deployed as the situation unfolded. By midday, police confirmed via Facebook that the active shooter incident had been resolved and the suspect was deceased. The suspect was identified using a drone while the area was still being secured.
In total, 11 victims were reported, including the deceased. Midland Memorial Hospital received nine of those victims. Four required surgery, with three moved to recovery and one still in the operating room at the time of the press conference.
The remaining five patients had already been discharged in stable condition. Mayor Blong confirmed she was not aware of any law enforcement officers being injured.
Witnesses near the scene described a massive police presence. Lee Carlisle, who was staying at a nearby Super 8 motel, told CBS News he heard around 20 gunshots before the situation shifted further down the street. He described seeing drones in the air, Texas Rangers, and roughly 50 officers responding to the scene.
The hospital also went into lockdown during the incident. A woman who identified herself only as Jane told reporters she was inside the hospital when casualties began arriving.
She said the lockdown lasted about an hour and a half and that hospital staff handled the situation with calm and professionalism throughout. Jane noted that the victims she saw appeared to be in stable condition, though the uncertainty about the shooter’s location at the time added to the tension inside the building.
“It makes me really scared that there are people walking around with guns who can just kill you and kill anyone around you,” Jane said. “That makes me feel really unsafe and very scared.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott released a statement through his press secretary expressing condolences to the victims and the broader Midland community.
“Governor Greg Abbott and First Lady Cecilia Abbott are deeply saddened by the incident in Midland,” the statement read. “Our hearts are with the victims, their families, and the entire Midland community.”
Midland is a city in western Texas, located roughly three hours south of Lubbock and about 330 miles west of Dallas. The city is best known for its ties to the oil industry and has a population of around 130,000 people.
Authorities have not released details about the identity of the suspect or a confirmed motive. The investigation remains active and ongoing. Further updates are expected as law enforcement continues to process the scene and interview witnesses. Officials are urging residents to stay away from the area until they are cleared to return.
