Shooting at Alameda’s South Shore Leaves Two Injured During Beach Takeover

What began as a routine Friday evening for many Alameda residents quickly turned alarming when reports of gunfire near the South Shore shopping center began flooding social media and neighborhood alert apps.

Residents across Bay Farm Island and surrounding areas took to Reddit to piece together what had happened, with accounts ranging from confused to deeply unsettling.

The initial confusion was understandable. Several people who heard the sounds assumed they were fireworks, a common enough occurrence near the waterfront.

One resident walking dogs near the Bay Farm shoreline described a group of kids gathered nearby who seemed completely unbothered, laughing and hanging around as if nothing had happened.

Another poster noted the sounds carried the sharp crack of automated weapons, not the dull pop most people associate with fireworks. Once sirens started rolling in, the speculation gave way to something more serious.

Multiple PulsePoint alerts flagged two medical emergencies in the same location, and witnesses described a heavy emergency response. According to one account, the entire Bay Farm fire department was dispatched to South Shore.

Cop cars lined the stretch from Walgreens to McDonald’s, and the intersection near Big 5 was shut down entirely. A Petco employee reportedly told a friend that the shooting happened just outside the store, sending staff into a panic.

Eyewitness Accounts Paint a Disturbing Picture

One of the more detailed accounts came from a resident who said they witnessed the incident directly. According to their post, a beach takeover had drawn a large crowd to Alameda Beach and South Shore that evening.

In the middle of it, a teenager estimated to be between 16 and 17 years old allegedly pulled out a gun and fired somewhere between 8 and 12 rounds at a rival group.

Two people were struck, one in the leg and one in the face. The witness noted that the overwhelming majority of people present appeared to be minors.

Another commenter described seeing two individuals, a driver and a passenger, pulled from a white car near the Big 5 sporting goods store.

The driver was taken away by emergency services immediately, while the passenger, still conscious, spoke with officers before receiving treatment.

Whether the shooting was the result of a drive-by or a confrontation on foot remained unclear in the thread, with various accounts slightly contradicting each other.

A Pattern That Is Beginning to Worry Longtime Residents

For some in the thread, the incident felt like part of a troubling trend. One commenter, a graduate of Alameda High School, expressed heartbreak over seeing what they described as more young people getting into serious trouble in recent years.

Others pointed out that South Shore had seen a similar gang-related shooting earlier in the same year, though that one had not resulted in injuries.

Beach takeovers have become a recurring flashpoint in Alameda. The Alameda Police Department had previously addressed the aftermath of one such event back in March, and community members are now openly questioning what it will take to prevent them from escalating further.
