Texas Broadcaster and Meteorologist, Mike Lozano, Passes Away, Leaving His Son, Robert Lozano

Family members, former colleagues, and friends are mourning the loss of Mike Lozano, a longtime meteorologist and broadcaster whose career touched viewers across several television markets and whose passion for science left a lasting impact on those closest to him.

The news of his passing was shared by his family in heartfelt tributes posted on social media. Loved ones remembered him not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his intelligence, humor, and dedication to family.

His son, Khail Michael Lozano, announced that his father had passed away early in the morning. In his tribute, he described Mike as one of the smartest and funniest people he had ever known and said he had always been proud to be his son. He concluded his message by expressing hope of being reunited with his father again one day.

A Lifelong Passion for Science and Broadcasting

Mike Lozano built a respected career in meteorology and broadcasting over several decades. According to family members and colleagues, he worked at multiple television stations, including KSAT 12 in San Antonio. He was also known in the amateur radio community by his call sign K5RLY.

His son, Robert Lozano, reflected on many of the adventures they shared throughout the years. Among those memories were broadcasting live from the Iowa State Fair, appearing together in a commercial, and traveling to Missouri to witness the total solar eclipse in 2017.

Robert credited his father with inspiring his love of science and astronomy. He recalled that Mike purchased his first telescope and an astronomy book that remains one of his treasured possessions.

Mike also encouraged his son’s interest in stargazing and supported his decision to purchase land that would later become the site of a personal observatory.

Family members noted that Mike’s sense of humor was one of his defining traits. Robert joked that his own unique sense of humor was something he inherited directly from his father.

Colleagues Recall a Respected Meteorologist and Friend

Mike’s brother, Edward Lozano, shared his sorrow over the loss, describing him as a wonderful brother and praising his successful career as a meteorologist and radio operator. He said Mike would be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Former coworkers and broadcasting colleagues also paid tribute following the news of his passing. Jamie Grout remembered Mike’s years at WHO-TV and KCCI-TV, sharing memories from a Children’s Miracle Network Telethon during the 1980s.

John R. King, who worked with Mike during their time at Palmer Broadcasting, reflected on the enjoyable experiences they shared in Des Moines. He recalled Mike’s willingness to laugh along with a lighthearted radio prank and remembered him as someone who helped make broadcasting both fun and memorable.

As tributes continue to pour in, many have highlighted Mike Lozano’s contributions to television meteorology, his enthusiasm for science, and the kindness he showed to family, friends, and coworkers throughout his life.

His family has expressed gratitude for the support and condolences they have received during this difficult time. They take comfort in the memories he created and the legacy he leaves behind through the many lives he touched.

Information regarding funeral and memorial arrangements has not yet been publicly announced.
