Kossuth High School Football Player Mason Mills, 17, Killed in Alcorn County Highway Crash
A 17-year-old boy from Alcorn County, Mississippi, died Saturday morning after a crash on Highway 72 West in the Union Center community. Mason Mills, who was preparing to begin his senior year at Kossuth High School, was remembered by his school, coaches, teammates, and community as a young man full of warmth, kindness, and genuine care for the people around him.
The crash claimed his life suddenly, leaving behind his parents, Lindy and Benji Mills, and his three sisters, Madi Jo, Marli, and Memory. No further details about the circumstances of the crash have been released by officials at this time.
Kossuth High School responded to the news with a heartfelt statement, mourning the loss of one of their own. The school asked for prayers for the Mills family, the Kossuth football team, and the Class of 2027, describing Mason as an amazing young man who always wore a smile. The statement acknowledged that the Kossuth community had once again lost someone far too soon.
Friends and community members who knew Mason described him as bright, caring, and the kind of person whose presence stayed with you long after the moment passed. He had a big heart, they said, and a genuine ability to bring joy to those around him.
By all accounts, he was looking forward to the year ahead, ready to step into the role of a senior and all that comes with it.
A Community Steps Up During Unimaginable Grief
In the hours following the news, people from across the community began reaching out to find ways to help.
A GoFundMe campaign was launched by family friend Tasha McVey on behalf of Mason’s mother, Lindy Mills, to help cover funeral expenses and ease the financial pressure the family now faces.
The fundraiser describes the heavy reality many families encounter in the aftermath of sudden, unexpected loss. Beyond the grief itself, there are funeral costs, time away from work, and everyday bills that do not stop regardless of what a family is going through.
The campaign set a goal of $18,000, and within a day of going live, it had already raised more than $16,000 through nearly 200 individual donations.
Messages poured in alongside the donations. People who knew Mason personally, former classmates, neighbors, and strangers who simply felt moved by the story, all contributed.
Some gave $50. Some gave more. A few left words of encouragement and love for a family they may have never met. The outpouring was a clear reflection of the impact Mason had and the kind of community he was part of.
For the Mills family, the days ahead will be among the hardest they will ever face. Losing a child is a grief without comparison, and losing one so suddenly leaves no room to prepare. What their community is offering them now is the chance to focus on each other, on their daughters, and on healing, without the added weight of financial uncertainty.
Those wishing to support the Mills family can find the GoFundMe campaign by searching “Support for the Mills Family After Mason’s Loss” on the GoFundMe website.
