Valencia, CA, Jeffrey Koons, 47, Was Found Dead in an SUV Near Town Center Mall

Authorities have identified the man found dead inside a vehicle near the Valencia Town Center Mall in Santa Clarita on Wednesday morning as Jeffrey Koons, 47, a transient.

The identification came from officials with the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office following an investigation by Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department homicide detectives, who ultimately determined that Koons died by suicide.

What Happened Wednesday Morning

At around 11:15 a.m., first responders were called to the 24200 block of Valencia Boulevard, near the Valencia Town Center Mall, after reports came in about an SUV with a broken window.

A firearm was also reportedly found on the floor next to the vehicle, according to Shirley Miller, a spokesperson for the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Station.

Firefighters from the Los Angeles County Fire Department also responded to the scene. Justin Yang, a spokesperson for the fire department, confirmed that Koons was found inside the vehicle and was pronounced dead on arrival.

LASD homicide detectives responded and investigated the scene. Deputy Fantom with the LASD Sheriff’s Information Bureau confirmed that detectives determined the manner of death to be suicide.
