UMBC Ice Hockey Goalie Ian Hutchison Dead at 21, Rockville Community Mourns the Loss

The Maryland hockey community is grieving the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Ian Hutchison, a former goaltender for the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) ice hockey club, who passed away at just 21 years old.

Born in 2004, Hutchison wore number 31 for the Retrievers and played in the American Collegiate Hockey Association (ACHA) division.

The UMBC Ice Hockey Club shared the news on May 30, 2026, writing:

“It is with deep sadness that we share the passing of UMBC Hockey alumni, Ian Hutchison, at the age of 21.”

The announcement quickly spread across social media, with condolences pouring in from teammates, coaches, alumni, and the broader hockey world.

Hutchison also had ties to the University of Maryland’s Terps Hockey program and Boston College’s men’s club hockey team, reflecting a young man who lived and breathed the sport he loved.

A goaltender by trade, Hutchison was the last line of defense in the crease, a role that demands mental toughness, focus, and an unwavering will to compete. By all accounts, he embodied those qualities not just on the ice, but in how he carried himself off it.

A Community United in Grief

The tributes that flooded in after news of his passing spoke volumes about the kind of person Hutchison was. The hockey media outlet Over The Boards Hockey posted: “The hockey world lost one of its own far too soon.

Today, we remember Ian Hutchison and extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, teammates, coaches, and everyone whose lives he touched. May his memory live on both on and off the ice.”

Hundreds of reactions and comments filled the posts shared by his former teams. Former teammates and strangers alike came together to express grief, remember his contributions, and send love to his family. The response was a testament to how deeply he had touched people during his short time on this earth.

The Maryland hockey community, which spans multiple universities and club programs across the state, is known for its tight-knit bonds.

Players move between programs, friendships are built across rival teams, and the connection to the sport runs deep. The loss of someone as young as Hutchison hits that community particularly hard.

Forever a Terrapin

The tribute graphic shared by the Maryland Terps Hockey program said it simply and powerfully: “Forever a Terrapin. Always in Our Hearts.”

Those words captured what so many were feeling as the news spread. Hutchison spent his playing days giving everything to the sport, suiting up in the black, red, and gold Maryland jersey with pride.

At just 21, Ian Hutchison had a lifetime of hockey and memories still ahead of him. He will be remembered not only for what he accomplished between the pipes, but for the joy he brought to those around him and the spirit he gave to every team he was part of.

The UMBC Ice Hockey Club and the broader Maryland hockey family ask that thoughts and prayers be extended to his family, friends, and teammates as they navigate this profound loss.

Ian Hutchison. 2004 to 2026. Gone too soon.
