West Des Moines, Iowa, Basketball Coach, Vincent Hanna, Passes Away, Leaving His Fiancée, Amina Cannie

The Des Moines community is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Vincent Hanna, a young man whose life left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him.

From the pulpit to the streets, from the studio to the sports courts, Vincent was a presence that could not be ignored and a spirit that could not be contained.

A Son, Father, and Community Pillar Gone Too Soon

Vincent Hanna was the only son of Reverend Alex Hanna and Lady Sharon Hanna, well-known and respected figures in the Des Moines faith community.

He grew up in Des Moines and later made his home in West Des Moines, Iowa, where he continued to build relationships and invest in the people around him.

By all accounts, he was more than just a pastor’s son. He was a father to two daughters, a fiancé, a mentor, a teacher, and a friend to many.

Bishop T. Linn Harris of Elpis Christian Fellowship was among the first to publicly acknowledge the loss, releasing a heartfelt statement on behalf of the broader faith community.

Beloved Des Moines Community of Faith It is with a heavy hearts, and a wrestling of the mind, that we acknowledge the passing of Vincent Hanna.

He described Vincent as a remarkable young man whose impact was immeasurable, noting that while his years were fewer than anyone would have wished, the legacy he leaves behind will continue to speak through his family, friends, and especially his daughters.

Those who knew Vincent personally paint a vivid picture of a man who showed up fully in every space he occupied.

A colleague from the Empower Change organization recalled running into Vincent just days before his death at a Hyvee grocery store in West Des Moines late at night.

The two shared laughs and conversation in the produce section, never imagining it would be their last. He went on to remember road trips, standing on stage in front of thousands, and nights spent in the studio sleeping on the floor while chasing dreams together.

A Legacy Felt Across Generations

What makes the outpouring of grief so striking is how wide it stretches. People from faith communities, sports circles, social organizations, and everyday neighborhoods have flooded social media with tributes.

Friends recall him as someone who poured into young people, offering guidance and encouragement in ways that will ripple outward for years to come. One community member noted that Vincent left a big impact on the youth, confident that his influence would continue long after his passing.

Perhaps the most devastating tribute came from his fiancée, Amina Cannie, who wrote publicly that she was supposed to be planning their wedding, not his funeral. Her words captured the cruel and sudden nature of the loss in a way that left few dry eyes.

Vincent Hanna I’m supposed to be planning our wedding, not your funeral 😔. This is the worse pain I’ve ever felt in my life. Love and miss you so much. This can’t be life 💔

Renee Hardman, who remembered Vincent from childhood when he attended bring-your-child-to-work days with his mother, called him a kind and gentle soul, describing him as a wonderful father who was gone far too soon.

The Hanna family has asked the community for space and time to process their grief.

In response, prayers, condolences, and memories continue to pour in from across Iowa and beyond. Vincent Hanna was buried under the weight of love from a community that refuses to let his name or his legacy fade quietly into silence.
