Why Jason Momoa’s Lobo Matters So Much in the New Supergirl Movie

Jason Momoa is trading in his trident for a space bike, and fans are already buzzing. The Aquaman star is officially playing Lobo in the upcoming Supergirl film, and according to James Gunn, he’s not just another side character. He’s key to the entire story.

James Gunn Breaks It Down

During a new episode of the DC Studios Showcase Official Podcast, Gunn explained exactly why Lobo is central to the movie’s plot. The Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow comic — the source material for the film — is more of a collection of mini-stories. So when it came time to turn it into a movie, they had to find a way to pull it all together.

“The truth is that Woman of Tomorrow in the comics is very much a bunch of little stories,” Gunn said. “We needed to create one throughline, one three-act story.”

And that’s where Lobo comes in.

Lobo’s Role in the Story

Lobo isn’t just showing up for a cameo or some quick fight scene. He’s a major figure. Gunn confirmed that the character is completely true to the comics — not mashed up with anyone else or watered down. He called Lobo “a totally separate character” and “maybe, in some ways, the biggest comic book character that’s never been in a film.”

That’s a bold statement, but it’s hard to argue. Lobo has been a fan favorite in DC Comics for decades. A brutal bounty hunter from Czarnia, he’s violent, loud, and completely unpredictable. Perfect foil for a straight-shooter like Supergirl.

Momoa Brings the Heat (and the Fame)

Momoa’s casting also solves a few other problems. Supergirl, played by House of the Dragon breakout Milly Alcock, is on a revenge mission after the death of someone close to her. The villain? Krem of the Yellow Hills, played by Matthias Schoenaerts. He’s a talented actor, no doubt, but not exactly a household name.

Enter Momoa.

His presence brings the kind of recognition and weight that can carry a movie. It helps link Supergirl to the larger DC universe and gives fans a reason to be curious — even if they don’t follow every issue of the comics.

What Lobo Adds Beyond Star Power

This isn’t just stunt casting. Gunn said he’s wanted to adapt Lobo for years. The character’s energy is chaotic, unpredictable, and intense — exactly the kind of chaos that can shake up a traditional origin story and make it stand out from the typical superhero formula.

Plus, Momoa has already proven he can play big, bold characters and still bring heart and humor. That mix could be exactly what this version of Supergirl needs.

What to Expect

The film, directed by Craig Gillespie and written by Ana Nogueira, drops on June 26, 2026. It’s part of DC’s first chapter titled Gods and Monsters, and it follows Superman, which kicks things off in July 2025.

Joining Alcock and Momoa are David Krumholtz, Emily Beecham, and Eve Ridley. Peter Safran and James Gunn are both producing.

And with Lobo riding shotgun, this movie might be a lot louder — and a lot more fun — than anyone expected.
