Why Did the Eagles Draft Andrew Mukuba in the 2025 NFL Draft?

The Philadelphia Eagles continued to beef up their defense during the 2025 NFL Draft, selecting defensive back Andrew Mukuba with the 64th overall pick — the final selection of the second round.

After grabbing linebacker Jihaad Campbell in the first round, Philly doubled down on defense with a player who offers serious flexibility in the secondary. Let’s get to know Mukuba and why the Eagles were smart to grab him when they did.

Who Is Andrew Mukuba?

Andrew Mukuba’s journey to the NFL is anything but ordinary.

Born in Zimbabwe, Mukuba moved to the United States at age 9, bringing with him a passion for sports and a drive that would eventually lead him to college football stardom. He began his collegiate career at Clemson, where he quickly made a name for himself, earning ACC Defensive Rookie of the Year honors as a freshman in 2021.

Over his time at Clemson, Mukuba flashed elite potential, but injuries started to take a toll. He stayed mostly healthy, missing only three games across two seasons, but it was enough to impact his overall consistency. Looking for a fresh start, Mukuba transferred to Texas — and he made the most of it.

How Did Mukuba Perform at Texas?

At Texas, Mukuba reminded everyone why he was once such a highly-touted recruit.

In 2024, he earned third-team All-SEC honors and finished the season ranked fourth in the nation with five interceptions. Despite being slightly undersized for a traditional safety role at 5-foot-11 and 186 pounds, Mukuba played fast, instinctively, and with the kind of ball skills NFL teams covet.

He proved he could line up both as a nickel corner and a free safety, giving the Eagles a valuable chess piece to move around depending on the matchup.

Where Will Mukuba Fit Into the Eagles’ Defense?

That’s the exciting part: Andrew Mukuba gives the Eagles options.

Right now, Philadelphia’s secondary is in a bit of flux. The team could slide Mukuba into the nickel role, allowing Cooper DeJean to kick outside to cornerback. Or, if they trust Sydney Brown to step up and replace C.J. Gardner-Johnson full-time at safety, Mukuba can be moved around as needed.

His versatility, quickness, and nose for the ball could make him an instant contributor, especially in sub-packages against teams that love to spread the field. He’s exactly the kind of modern, hybrid defender today’s NFL defenses need.

Why Should Eagles Fans Be Excited?

Simply put: Mukuba fits Philly’s identity — tough, smart, and versatile.

He’s overcome challenges, adapted to new environments, and produced at a high level in both the ACC and SEC. That speaks volumes about his resilience and ability to handle big stages — something that will be crucial in a passionate city like Philadelphia.

If Mukuba can stay healthy and continue developing, don’t be surprised if he quickly becomes a fan favorite for the Eagles. He plays with heart, and he plays fast — two things Philly fans always appreciate.
