Who Was Dave Shapiro? Dave Shapiro Dies in Tragic Plane Crash
It’s a heartbreaking time for the rock and alternative music scene. Dave Shapiro, the beloved music agent and co-founder of Sound Talent Group, has died in a small plane crash in San Diego. He was just 42 years old.
The crash happened early Thursday morning in Murphy Canyon, a military neighborhood. Six people were onboard the private jet, including Shapiro and two of his colleagues from Sound Talent Group. Authorities are still confirming the identities of the others, but the agency has already shared the devastating news that all three of its team members onboard were lost in the tragedy.
Who Was Dave Shapiro?
If you’ve followed the rock and emo music scenes over the last two decades, chances are you’ve heard of Dave Shapiro. He wasn’t a frontman or a guitarist. He was the guy behind the curtain, making things happen for some of your favorite bands. His client list reads like a who’s who of alternative and pop rock: Pierce the Veil, Sum 41, Story of the Year, Vanessa Carlton, Hanson, Eve 6, and so many more.
He co-founded Sound Talent Group in 2018 with Tim Borror and Matt Andersen after their work at the Agency Group and United Talent Agency. The company quickly became a major player in the live music industry, with offices in San Diego, New York, and Nashville. Dave didn’t just book tours. He helped build careers, fueled the live music experience, and gave countless bands a real shot at making it big.
Dave was also a founding member of the National Independent Talent Organization (NITO), an advocacy group formed to protect and support independent booking agencies. When live music came to a halt during the pandemic, Dave played a key role in helping the industry survive. He brought the same energy and creativity to NITO as he did to every tour and band he supported.
Fans, Friends, and Artists Pay Tribute to Dave Shapiro
As news of his death spread, social media was flooded with tributes from artists and fans alike. The band Hanson, longtime clients of Dave, wrote, “Dave was fearless in life, and tireless in his work. He was the kind of friend you want on your speed dial.” They also shared how grateful they were for the 15 years of friendship and work they shared with him.
Ryan Kirby from Fit for a King wrote, “People don’t understand how much of an impact Dave Shapiro had on the alternative music scene. RIP, you truly made this scene a better place.”
Lou Miceli Jr., formerly of Palisades, added, “Most likely your favourite band worked in some way, shape or form with Dave Shapiro. His name was synonymous with the scene. My heart breaks for everyone lost in this tragic accident.”
Even podcasts like State of the Scene chimed in, calling this week’s events “a f***ing tragedy” and sending love to Dave’s friends and family.
Dave Shapiro Was More Than a Music Agent
Beyond his incredible impact on music, Dave was a man with many passions. Flying was one of them. FAA records show that he was a certified pilot, flight instructor, and ground instructor. He even founded Velocity Aviation, offering everything from flight training to aircraft leasing. According to the company’s site, his love for flying began in 2005, when he took his first intro flight after saving up some money as a young music exec.
That love never faded. Whether it was flying helicopters, BASE jumping, or instructing new pilots, Dave chased the sky the same way he chased music opportunities — with passion and drive.
The jet involved in the San Diego crash was reportedly registered in Dave’s name. Authorities haven’t confirmed whether he was flying the plane, but it’s clear that aviation was a major part of his life.
Was Dave Shapiro Married?
Dave’s Instagram, though mostly quiet in recent years, features several glimpses into his personal life. His wife, Julia Shapiro — also known as Julia Pawlik — is a forensic scientist originally from Perth, Australia. The couple met through a friend at the Self Help Music Festival, and their connection quickly grew into a marriage built on shared adventure and love.
Why This Loss Hits So Hard
Dave Shapiro wasn’t just a businessman in the music industry. He was a lifeline for many artists. A mentor. A fearless leader. And someone who truly loved what he did. The hole he leaves behind isn’t just professional — it’s deeply personal for so many people who knew him, worked with him, and admired his spirit.
To fans, he made it possible to see their favorite bands live. To artists, he gave guidance, stability, and friendship. To fellow agents and industry professionals, he was a trailblazer.
The music won’t sound the same without him in the background, moving the pieces, building the tours, and cheering artists on from side stage.
Rest in peace, Dave Shapiro. The scene you helped build will never forget you.
