Who Is Joseph Ladapo? Florida Surgeon General Who Ended All Vaccine Mandates Sparks Outrage

Florida’s Surgeon General, Dr. Joseph Ladapo, is once again in the national spotlight after announcing that the state will eliminate all vaccine mandates—including those for schoolchildren.

Speaking at a press conference in Tampa, Ladapo delivered one of his most controversial remarks yet, comparing vaccine mandates to slavery. “Every last one of them is wrong and drips with disdain and slavery,” he declared.

Challenging the government’s authority over individual health choices, he added: “Who am I as a government or anyone else, or who am I as a man standing here now to tell you what to do with your body?”

Florida’s Radical New Policy

The decision aligns with Governor Ron DeSantis’ long-standing opposition to COVID-19 restrictions and mandates. But Florida’s move is set to challenge the national norm. Currently, all 50 states require vaccinations for children attending public schools, though rules on exemptions differ.

Federal health data has already raised concerns. The CDC reported that vaccination rates among U.S. kindergarteners have dropped for diseases like measles, diphtheria, and polio in the 2024–25 school year. Alarmingly, measles cases recently surged to their highest levels since the illness was declared eliminated in the U.S. back in 2000.

Who Is Dr. Joseph Ladapo?

Dr. Joseph A. Ladapo is a Nigerian-American physician who immigrated to the U.S. and went on to study at Harvard University, earning both an M.D. and a Ph.D. in health policy.

Before stepping into Florida politics, Ladapo worked as a professor of medicine at New York University and later secured tenure at UCLA. In 2021, Governor DeSantis appointed him as Florida’s Surgeon General, a move that cemented Ladapo as a key figure in the state’s culture wars.

A Record of Controversy

Ladapo is best known for his opposition to COVID-19 safety measures. He has consistently rejected vaccine and mask mandates, promoted alternative treatments, and raised doubts about the safety of COVID-19 vaccines—positions that put him at odds with the CDC and mainstream medical organizations.

Critics accuse him of spreading misinformation, with federal health officials warning that his public statements undermine trust in science.

Beyond vaccines, Ladapo has also opposed gender-affirming care for transgender and nonbinary minors, another stance that has fueled political and public backlash.

Why It Matters

Florida’s dramatic policy shift comes at a time when vaccination rates are falling nationwide, raising fears of outbreaks of once-controlled diseases. Public health experts warn that removing school vaccine mandates could put children and communities at greater risk.

For now, Ladapo remains defiant. His comments and policy stance show no signs of softening, making him one of the most polarizing health officials in the U.S.
