Utah Doctor and Hall of Fame Athlete Dr. Tricia Ferrin, 50, Passes Away After Cancer Battle

Dr. Tricia Lee Ferrin, a family medicine physician who spent her career quietly transforming the lives of patients across northern Utah, passed away on the morning of June 8, 2026, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was 50 years old.

Born November 28, 1975, in Layton, Utah, Tricia arrived into the world six minutes after her twin sister Tara, a detail her family recalled with warmth and humor.

She grew up in a neighborhood she loved, one full of outdoor games, laughter, and the kind of childhood friendships that last a lifetime. From the beginning, she was the kind of person who threw herself fully into everything she touched.

Her athletic gifts were remarkable. Competing in soccer, basketball, and softball, Ferrin helped her teams win state and conference championships.

She earned the NJCAA’s “Betty Jo Graber” award, given annually to the top female junior college athlete in the nation, and was later inducted into the athletic halls of fame at both Utah Valley and Weber State universities.

When a friend spotted her name on the Weber State Hall of Fame plaque at a basketball game years later and called to ask why she had never mentioned it, her answer was simple. It was not a big deal, she said. Others deserved it too.

From the Playing Field to the Examination Room

After graduating from Kansas City University College of Medicine, Ferrin completed her residency in family medicine at McKay Dee Hospital in Ogden, Utah. She went on to practice at IHC clinics before finishing her career at Tanner Clinic, where she joined the staff in August 2022.

Colleagues described her as deeply compassionate and genuinely committed to her patients in ways that went well beyond what her schedule required. She followed up with text messages and phone calls to explain test results and check in on concerns, treating each patient as a person rather than an appointment.

Tanner Clinic released a statement following her death, noting that she made a lasting impact on patients, staff, and the community through her kindness and dedication. Former medical school classmates echoed the same sentiment.

It is with heavy hearts that we share the passing of Dr. Tricia Ferrin after a courageous battle with cancer.
Since joining Tanner Clinic in August 2022, Dr. Ferrin made a lasting impact on our patients, staff, and community through her compassionate care, dedication, and kindness. She was deeply loved by her patients and greatly respected by her colleagues.
Our hearts, prayers, and deepest condolences are with her family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Dr. Ferrin will be dearly missed and lovingly remembered by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
There will be a visitation on Thursday, June 11th from 6-8 pm at the Layton Lindquist Mortuary. Friday Visitation from 9:30-10:30 am at the Morgan West Stake Center, 2755 West Old High Road. The funeral services will begin at 11:00 am.

One described her as a brilliant physician who lived the principles of her Christian faith more fully than anyone he had ever encountered.

Outside the clinic, Ferrin found joy in hiking, biking, running, skiing, and boating. She loved the mountains, taught her nieces and nephews how to ski, and took particular delight in piloting a ski boat across calm water with someone brave enough to hang on at the end of the rope.

She also helped design and manufacture snow skis, a project that brought her siblings together and created memories the family will carry for years.

She is survived by her parents, Lee and Kathy Ferrin, her twin sister Tara, her brothers David and Jeff, and nine nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for Friday, June 12, 2026, at 11 a.m. at the Morgan West Stake Center in Morgan, Utah. A visitation will be held Thursday evening at Lindquist’s Layton Mortuary and again Friday morning before the service. The funeral will also be live-streamed through the mortuary’s website.
