King’s College Organist Harrison Cole, 25, Dies in Tragic Incident Along the River Cam in Cambridge
The world of sacred music lost one of its brightest young talents this week following the death of Harrison Cole, the 25-year-old Assisting Organist at King’s College, Cambridge.
Cole died in a tragic incident involving the River Cam near King’s College Chapel, sending ripples of grief through the university and the wider classical music world.
The circumstances surrounding his death remain under investigation, but tributes from colleagues, fellow musicians, and institutions have poured in almost immediately, painting the picture of a young man whose talent, warmth, and dedication touched everyone around him.
A Musical Journey That Began Early
Harrison Cole showed exceptional promise from a young age. He was awarded a music scholarship at Ipswich School, and during his school years, he spent three years studying at the Junior Department of the Royal Academy of Music. That early grounding set the tone for everything that followed.
Before heading to university, Cole took up a gap year organ scholarship at Wells Cathedral, one of England’s most storied and acoustically magnificent sacred spaces.
The experience there deepened his artistry and gave him a working knowledge of the professional church music world that most young musicians only encounter years later.
He then went up to Trinity College, Cambridge, as an organ scholar in 2019, where he continued to develop his skills in one of the finest choral traditions in the world. After graduating, he served as assistant organist at Gonville and Caius College before being appointed Assisting Organist at King’s College in September 2024.
A Career Poised to Soar
In the short time he had been at King’s, Cole made a mark that few could ignore. He accompanied the world-famous Choir of King’s College on recordings, broadcasts, and international tours, including visits to Australia, Estonia, the United States, and Canada.
He also played a central role in two Festivals of Nine Lessons and Carols, the beloved Christmas Eve service broadcast across the globe each year and watched by millions.
He had been due to leave King’s this summer, and in recent weeks had been appointed to assistantships at two prestigious London churches: St Paul’s Knightsbridge and St Michael’s Cornhill.
Both are significant musical institutions with strong choral and organ traditions, and the appointments signalled that Cole was on the cusp of building a flourishing freelance career as pianist, organist, and conductor.
The Choir of King’s College issued a heartfelt statement confirming his death and paying tribute to his contributions. Provost Gillian Tett said the loss had been felt keenly across the entire College community, particularly among the Choir and Chapel teams.
Organist Richard Gowers, speaking in a personal capacity, described the news as an absolute tragedy and a shock, adding that Cole was a top person and a wonderful musician whose loss is incalculable.
Harrison Cole was 25 years old. A memorial service is being planned to celebrate his life and music. His family, friends, and an entire musical community now carry forward the weight of a loss that feels, by any measure, far too soon.
