Tom Rhys Harries Cast as Clayface in DC’s Next Big Horror Flick

DC’s next major film just found its lead. Welsh actor Tom Rhys Harries is stepping into the spotlight as Clayface, one of the most unique and terrifying characters in the DC universe. The news was confirmed by DC Studios boss James Gunn himself, who shared the casting on X.

Gunn wrote, “After a long and incredibly exhaustive search, we finally have our DCU Clayface in Tom Rhys Harries.” He added that both he and The Batman director Matt Reeves were “blown away” by Harries’ performance during auditions.

A Different Kind of DC Movie

Clayface isn’t your typical superhero film. It’s not about capes and villains throwing punches in the sky. This one leans into the horror genre. According to Variety, the movie is being described as more of a body-horror experience. It tells the story of a B-movie actor who drinks a mysterious substance to boost his career. Instead of success, it turns him into a creature made entirely of clay.

Think of it like Death Becomes Her, but darker and without the laughs.

Mike Flanagan, who’s known for The Haunting of Hill House, is writing the script. James Watkins, the director of Eden Lake, is behind the camera. And Matt Reeves is on board as producer, which makes sense since Reeves’ version of Batman gave DC one of its rare wins in recent years.

Tom Rhys Harries Is on the Rise

This role is a big deal for Harries. He’s been steadily building his resume with strong performances. Viewers might recognize him from Apple TV’s Suspicion where he starred opposite Uma Thurman. He also appeared in Kandahar with Gerard Butler and in Guy Ritchie’s The Gentleman. He’s held his own next to veterans like Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche in The Return.

Landing a lead in a major DC production is a big step up and could put Harries on the international map in a whole new way.

What’s Next for DC

DC Studios is going through a major revamp under Gunn’s leadership. After several misfires like The Flash and Black Adam, the studio is ready for a fresh start. Gunn’s Superman film is set to launch that reset this summer. Clayface is part of that new lineup and will hit theaters on September 11, 2026.

With a mix of horror, drama, and a solid creative team, Clayface might just be the bold move DC needs. And with Tom Rhys Harries leading the way, it’s got people talking already.
