Toledo Freshman Pole Vaulter and River Valley High School Alum Eva Moran, 19, Dead After Ohio Crash

Eva Jae Moran, a 19-year-old freshman pole vaulter on the University of Toledo Women’s Track and Field team, died Friday afternoon following a car crash in Marion County, Ohio.

The accident has left the university community, her teammates, and supporters across the country in deep grief.

According to the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 5:28 p.m. on Friday on Route 309. Moran was driving eastbound when her vehicle struck the rear of a GMC Arcadia.

The impact sent her car left of center into the westbound lane, where it collided with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. Moran was ejected from her vehicle during the collision.

She was transported to a hospital in Marion, where she later died from her injuries. The 19-year-old driver of the GMC Arcadia was treated at the scene for injuries, while the 23-year-old driver of the Jeep sustained minor injuries and was hospitalized. An investigation into the crash remains ongoing.

Moran was from Caledonia, Ohio, a small town located east of Marion, making the crash especially devastating for the local community that had watched her grow up and develop into a talented young athlete.

A Rising Star Who Left Her Mark on the Program

In just her first year competing for the Rockets, Moran had already begun carving out a place in the program’s record books.

She posted a personal best mark of 3.57 meters at the Mid-American Conference Outdoor Championships, finishing 10th and recording the sixth-best pole vault height in University of Toledo program history.

Earlier in the season, she placed third at the GVSU Big Meet in February with a mark of 3.43 meters, and fourth at the 56th Annual GINA Relays in April with a clearance of 3.27 meters.

Before arriving at Toledo, Moran had built an impressive high school career at River Valley High School in Caledonia, where she competed in basketball, cross country, and track and field. She qualified for the Ohio State Meet in the pole vault three consecutive years, from 2022 through 2024, placing fifth as a senior.

She also set the Mid-Ohio Athletic Conference record in the pole vault with a clearance of 12 feet, half an inch. She enrolled at the University of Toledo in 2024 and was pursuing a degree in health sciences.

University of Toledo Vice President and Director of Athletics Tom Moreland expressed the community’s sorrow in an official statement.

He described Moran as an outstanding student-athlete whose determination, character, and positive spirit touched everyone who knew her, and extended condolences to her parents, Alena and Derrek, and her siblings, Maddox, Jaxton, and Kya.

Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Andrea Grove-McDonough added that Moran approached every practice, every competition, and every challenge with a positive attitude and genuine love for her teammates. She was eager to learn, eager to improve, and proud to represent Toledo.

Tributes have poured in from athletic programs and fans across the country. The Eastern Michigan University track and field team offered condolences on social media, and Toledo’s associate athletic director called it an incredibly sad loss.

Eva Moran was just beginning her story. She will not be forgotten.
