Gun Pulled, Shot Fired at OLPH Fun Festival in Toledo; No Injuries Reported

A community festival at Our Lady of Perpetual Help (OLPH) parish in Toledo, Ohio turned chaotic Saturday evening after witnesses reported a gun was pulled and at least one shot was fired, sending hundreds of attendees scrambling to get away.

No injuries were confirmed in early reports circulating on social media, but the incident rattled a crowd that had gathered for what is typically one of the neighborhood’s most anticipated summer events.

Eyewitnesses Describe Chaos Near the Food Area

Multiple people who were at the festival took to Facebook within minutes of the incident, describing a scene of sudden panic.

Jean Kara, one of the first to post, wrote that someone pulled a gun and that while nobody was shot, a round was fired. Her account was quickly backed up by others who said they could hear the gunshot clearly, including in video footage that began circulating online.

Cynthia Garcia, who said she was at the event with four children, described a disturbing sequence leading up to the shooting. She said an earlier confrontation had already drawn police attention when a young man allegedly attempted to pull a gun on her husband.

According to Garcia, a nearby officer spotted the weapon under the man’s shirt and intervened, leading to an arrest.

Moments later, she said, the shooting occurred near the food area, sending children and adults running in every direction. She also reported that a separate fight broke out at the entrance as organizers began clearing the grounds.

Video posted in the comments of one Facebook thread appeared to capture the sound of the gunshot, and several commenters confirmed hearing it in the footage. One attendee, Sherri Niner, described what she saw as a full stampede of people.

Others noted that the festival had been running smoothly for most of the day before a large crowd arrived in the evening and the situation deteriorated.

Community Frustration Boils Over

The incident sparked immediate outrage and sadness across social media. Many Toledo residents expressed frustration that a parish-run community festival, held at 2255 Central Grove, could not be enjoyed without violence.

Turner Mari wrote that police were present and questioned why Toledo can never seem to hold events without trouble breaking out. Another commenter, Libbie Lopez, lamented that there will soon be nothing safe left for people to do in the city.

Sydney Lafaye, who posted a warning urging parents to pick up their children from the festival, later noted that kids had been dropped off unattended throughout the evening.

Several commenters agreed that unsupervised youth in large numbers contributed to the atmosphere that escalated into violence.

Not everyone was convinced a shot was actually fired. A handful of people in the comment sections said they had been at the event and heard nothing. One commenter, Ariel Gareau, flatly stated no shots were fired.

The conflicting accounts reflect the confusion that often follows chaotic public incidents, particularly when people are spread across a large outdoor space.

As of early reporting, Toledo police had not released an official statement. The OLPH Fun Festival is an annual community event organized by the parish and is typically known as a family-friendly summer tradition for the south Toledo area.
