Texas A&M Meat Judging Athlete Avery Detten Dies After Accident, Organ Donation to Benefit Up to 65 Lives

The Hereford, Texas, community and Texas A&M University are mourning the loss of Avery Detten, a beloved student, athlete, and member of the 2026 Fightin’ Texas Aggie Meat Judging Team, who passed away recently after an accident.

She was a daughter, sister, granddaughter, niece, cousin, friend, teammate, and coworker to many people whose lives she touched deeply during her short time on earth.

Avery grew up in Hereford, Texas, where she attended Hereford High School before enrolling at Texas A&M University in 2024. Those who knew her described her as someone who brought warmth and energy into every room she entered.

Whether it was a practice session, a workout, a van ride, or a cooler she walked into during meat judging events, her presence made things brighter for everyone around her.

A Heart That Gave Even in Death

In one of the most profound final acts of kindness, Avery had registered as an organ donor. Her family shared that her donation could benefit up to 65 lives, a remarkable testament to the generous spirit she carried throughout her life.

Her mother, Jessica Oman Detten, announced the news on social media, writing that Avery was broken but is now whole, and that her gifts will help others become whole as well.

The family also shared that in the days following the accident, thousands of people prayed for Avery, and there were reports of several individuals returning to their faith because of her story.

Her passing, as heartbreaking as it is, has already moved people in ways that her family believes will continue long after she is gone.

Jessica noted that beautiful rain fell from the sky after Avery left this world, which the family saw as tears of joy flowing through the floors of heaven.

The announcement was accompanied by a scripture from Psalms: “This is the day the Lord has made. Let us rejoice and be glad.”

An Aggie Family Grieves One of Their Own

The Fightin’ Texas Aggie Meat Judging Team released a statement mourning the loss of their teammate, calling Avery an incredible presence whose infectious personality lit up every aspect of team life.

Coaches and teammates alike described her as someone whose kindness, faith, and selflessness set her apart and made everyone around her strive to be better.

The statement from the program expressed deep gratitude for the impact Avery had not only on the team but on everyone she crossed paths with, adding that her memory will continue to live on through the countless lives she touched.

Avery is survived by her parents, Jessica and Dennis Detten, and her siblings Jack, Rachel, and Sam.

Her family shared that she is now reunited in heaven with her beloved grandfather, Ralph Detten, and is meeting her maternal grandmother, June Oman, for the very first time.

Community members across Hereford, the broader Texas Panhandle, and the Texas A&M family have flooded social media with tributes, prayers, and messages of support for the Detten family.
