Raleigh, NC, and Former JMU Football Player Lucas (Luke) Warner Passes Away in a Car Accident, Leaving His Wife, Karina Warner

Lucas “Luke” Warner, a former James Madison University football player and JMU alumnus, was killed in a car accident, sending shockwaves through the JMU community and beyond. Warner, who graduated from JMU in 2022, had been a beloved member of the Dukes football program during the 2018 and 2019 seasons under head coach Mike Houston.

Warner grew up in North Carolina, where he established himself as a three-year starter at Charlotte Christian before making his way to Harrisonburg, Virginia, to join the JMU Dukes.

His arrival came during a pivotal moment in the program’s history. As part of the 2019 JMU squad, Warner helped the team capture the Colonial Athletic Association title and advance all the way to the FCS National Championship game, where they faced the powerhouse North Dakota State Bison.

That run remains one of the most celebrated chapters in JMU football history, and Warner was part of the brotherhood that made it happen.

Teammates, Friends, and the JMU Community Mourn the Loss

The outpouring of grief following the news was immediate and heartfelt. Former teammates and fans flooded social media with tributes, remembering Warner not just for his contributions on the field but for the kind of person he was off it.

Those who knew him consistently described him as someone who made every room better simply by walking into it.

“RIP Luke. Nothing but a positive and great person to everyone he encountered,” wrote former teammate Jack Brigham on social media. Another friend remembered him as “Luke the Duke,” calling him someone who was “always full of life.”

One post captured what so many people seemed to feel: that Warner “brought joy and laughs to everyone around him.”

His former teammate Isaac Ukwu shared a tribute on Instagram, posting a photo of the two of them together in a gym, both wearing purple Dukes Football gear and grinning widely. The image, paired with a dove and prayer hands emoji, said everything without needing many words.

Off the field, Warner had built a full and joyful life after his playing days. He was living in Raleigh, North Carolina, with his wife Karina Warner, whom he had recently married.

Just eight weeks before his death, he posted wedding reception photos on Instagram to an outpouring of congratulations from friends and family.

The comments were filled with warmth, with people calling him and Karina beautiful together and gushing over the celebration.

One friend wrote, “Had the best time celebrating you two.” Warner himself responded in the comments, “Ahh smiling at my phone, I love you all.”

Luke Warner leaves behind his wife Karina, a community of teammates and friends who adored him, and memories of a young man who seemed to pour genuine warmth into everything he did. The JMU football family, fans included, is mourning deeply.
