Peter Wright’s Rise to Darts Stardom: From Window Fitter to World Champion

Peter Wright’s journey to the top of the darts world is nothing short of inspiring. The two-time world champion, known affectionately as “Snakebite,” has become one of the most recognizable figures in the sport, but his path was anything but straightforward. At one point, Wright nearly quit darts to work as a window fitter, but thanks to unwavering support from his wife, Joanne, he persevered and reached the pinnacle of the game.

Who is Peter Wright?

Born on March 10, 1979, in Livingston, Scotland, Peter Wright moved to London at the age of five. Now 45 years old, Wright is currently ranked No. 8 in the darts world rankings. Although he faced a disappointing exit in the second round of the most recent World Darts Championship, his previous victories in 2020 and 2022 at Alexandra Palace solidified his legacy.

Wright’s nickname, “Snakebite,” stems from his love of snakes, not the popular alcoholic drink. His vibrant personality and flamboyant hairstyles, often featuring colorful mohawks, make him stand out on the oche. Interestingly, those striking hairstyles are the handiwork of his wife, Joanne, who is not just his stylist but also his biggest supporter and financial manager.

The Role of Joanne Wright

Joanne Wright, often referred to as the mastermind behind Peter’s unique image, plays a critical role both behind the scenes and in the spotlight. The couple met while working at Warner’s holiday camp when Peter was 22 and Jo was a waitress. Their relationship blossomed from there, and they’ve been inseparable ever since.

Jo isn’t just responsible for Peter’s iconic look; she also manages the family finances. Despite Wright earning millions in prize money, he famously revealed that Jo gives him a modest weekly allowance of £200. This careful financial planning ensures that the family remains secure, even as Peter’s career evolves.

“My prize money gets paid into my wife’s company account and I’m paid a wage,” Wright shared. “Jo sorts out the business side for when I retire. I’m probably the poorest darts player who’s world number one.”

This disciplined approach to money management reflects their humble beginnings and the sacrifices they made to reach this level. Wright credits his wife and her father for backing him when he decided to pursue darts full-time, giving him the financial support needed to cover travel, entry fees, and accommodation.

From Odd Jobs to Darts Glory

Before making his mark in professional darts, Peter Wright worked a series of odd jobs. From cleaning cars to delivering crates of lemonade and Coke for Bil-Co lorries, Wright’s work history is as colorful as his hair. He also trained as a motor mechanic, worked as a labourer on construction sites, and even spent time as a pot washer.

Wright’s professional darts career began in earnest in 2008, but his first season yielded a meager £1,200 in prize money. It wasn’t until he watched the Grand Slam of Darts on television in 2007 that he believed he could compete at the highest level.

“I was watching the Grand Slam of Darts on TV and I said to Jo, ‘I can beat him and him,’” Wright recalled. “She said, ‘Go on then. If you think you can do it, let’s do it.’ And I tried.”

By 2014, Wright reached his first World Championship final. However, by that point, the family’s finances were strained. “I knew I needed to win because we had no money left,” Wright admitted. “Jo didn’t even know how much I had spent.”

That year was a turning point. Although he lost in the final, Wright’s performance paved the way for future success. Six years later, in 2020, he won his first world title, followed by another victory in 2022.

Net Worth and Career Earnings

Peter Wright’s net worth is estimated to be around £3 million, with significant earnings coming from his tournament victories and endorsements. According to the Professional Darts Corporation’s (PDC) Order of Merit, Wright is currently eighth, with £498,000 in prize money accumulated over the last two years.

In terms of prize money, the PDC World Darts Championship offers a staggering £1 million to be distributed among the players. With two world titles and numerous other accolades, Wright has secured his place as one of the highest earners in the sport.

Life Beyond the Oche

While Peter Wright’s focus remains on darts, his family life is equally important. Wright and Joanne have three children, and despite his fame, they prefer to keep their private life away from the public eye. The couple enjoys spending time together at home in Mendham, Suffolk, where Wright practices religiously to maintain his competitive edge.

Peter Wright’s journey exemplifies the importance of perseverance, belief, and the unwavering support of loved ones. From window fitting and pot washing to standing atop the darts world, Wright’s career proves that no dream is too far-fetched with the right people by your side.
