MPD Negotiators Spent 40 Minutes Trying to Save a Man’s Life at Minnehaha Falls
A warm evening at one of Minneapolis’s most beloved outdoor destinations turned somber on Tuesday night when a tense police standoff near the Sea Salt Eatery at Minnehaha Falls ended with a man taking his own life.
The incident, which drew a heavy law-enforcement response, left witnesses shaken and the surrounding park temporarily closed.
Around 8:07 p.m., multiple Minneapolis Police Department squads responded to an officer help call at South Minnehaha Park Drive.
Park Police quickly blocked off all roads surrounding Minnehaha Falls, leaving drivers and nearby residents confused and concerned about what was unfolding inside the park.
A Standoff Draws Crowds and Concern
According to eyewitness accounts shared on social media, the man had been fleeing a prior encounter with police before pulling into the Sea Salt parking lot, a popular restaurant perched along the creek just below the falls. He was armed with a handgun — not a rifle, as some early reports suggested — and MPD negotiators arrived on scene to attempt to talk him down.
James Scott, who identified himself as an eyewitness and later spoke with police, described the scene in detail.
The man was not pointing the weapon at the crowd of diners and park-goers who had gathered nearby. Instead, he directed the gun at himself during what became a roughly 40-minute negotiation. Scott said he heard the single shot that ended the standoff and confirmed his belief that the man had died.
Crowds at the busy outdoor restaurant were evacuated as the standoff continued. Some witnesses reported confusion about whether the weapon was pointed at the public, but police on the scene maintained a perimeter while negotiators worked to resolve the situation peacefully.
Tragic Outcome Despite Negotiation Efforts
City Council member Aurin Chowdhury was among the first officials to publicly acknowledge the situation, describing it as a “person in crisis” and confirming that MPD negotiators had been deployed. A follow-up post confirmed the worst: the man had died by suicide.
The news rippled quickly through Minneapolis community forums and neighborhood social media groups, with many residents expressing grief for the individual and his family, as well as concern for those who witnessed the event firsthand.
“Very sad,” wrote one witness who described watching part of the standoff before managing to leave the park.
Minnehaha Falls draws thousands of visitors during summer evenings, and Sea Salt is a neighborhood institution known for its long lines and festive atmosphere.
For those present Tuesday night, the experience was a jarring and heartbreaking contrast to what is usually a joyful gathering spot.
As of late Tuesday evening, no official statement had been released by MPD beyond what city officials shared on social media.
