Legendary Comic Book Writer Peter David Dies at 68

Peter David, the beloved comic book writer known for his groundbreaking work on The Incredible Hulk, has passed away at the age of 68. The news was shared on Sunday by his longtime friend and fellow author, Keith R.A. DeCandido, in a heartfelt Facebook post.

DeCandido wrote, “Just got the news that Peter David finally lost his rather lengthy battle with his failing physical form last night.” He recalled meeting David 35 years ago and described him as not only a respected creator but also a cherished friend and colleague. Along with the tribute, he posted a photo from Peter and Kathleen’s wedding in 2001, featuring Peter and his best man, legendary writer Harlan Ellison. In the picture, David once joked he looked like Daffy Duck next to Ellison’s Bugs Bunny, a comparison that summed up their playful friendship.

Peter David’s passing comes after a long and difficult battle with health problems. In recent years, he suffered from kidney disease, minor surgeries, and strokes. He had even been placed on a ventilator just days before his death due to breathing issues. His wife, Kathleen O’Shea David, kept fans updated through a GoFundMe campaign that was relaunched by a family friend to help cover growing medical bills. Despite all the health struggles, Kathleen said in a recent update that Peter had been showing signs of improvement, making the loss even more heartbreaking.

Fans know Peter David best for his unforgettable 12-year run writing The Incredible Hulk during the late 1980s and 1990s. He brought new depth to the character by exploring Bruce Banner’s psychological struggles, particularly themes like multiple personality disorder. His storytelling was rich, emotional, and way ahead of its time.

David also created memorable characters within the Hulk universe, including the Riot Squad and the Pantheon. But his talent didn’t stop with Marvel’s green giant. He wrote for major titles like Aquaman, Supergirl, Young Justice, Spider-Man 2099, Captain Marvel, and X-Factor. His creativity and sense of humor made him one of the most respected and admired writers in comics.

Outside of comics, David was also known for his work in novels, TV tie-ins, and scripts. He had a unique voice that was both funny and thoughtful, and he made every project feel personal.

Peter David is survived by his wife Kathleen and their daughters Ariel, Shana, Gwen, and Caroline. Fans, friends, and fellow creators have flooded social media with tributes, remembering the man behind some of the most iconic comic stories of the last few decades.

Peter David’s imagination helped shape the world of comics for generations. He didn’t just write superheroes. He gave them soul.
