Kristin Cavallari Opens Up About Cutting Ties With Her Father
Kristin Cavallari is getting honest about one of the toughest choices she’s made. The former Laguna Beach and The Hills star recently revealed that cutting her father out of her life was not only necessary but the best decision she’s ever made. In a heartfelt interview with People, the 38-year-old mom of three didn’t hold back when talking about her family history and emotional healing.
“I Don’t Miss Him”
Kristin shared that her decision to cut off her dad came after years of emotional build-up. “I mean, honestly, and this might sound messed up to some people, but it’s the best decision I’ve ever made,” she said. “Such a weight has been lifted from me.”
She explained that she was around 35 when she finally made the choice, adding that it wasn’t something done on impulse. It took years of feeling dismissed, criticized, and hurt before she was finally able to walk away. “There’s not one day where I miss him,” she said without hesitation.
Her Kids Were the Final Straw
Kristin made it clear that the situation reached a boiling point when her father crossed boundaries with her children. She shares three kids—Camden, Jaxon, and Saylor—with her ex-husband, former NFL player Jay Cutler.
According to Kristin, her father failed to apologize for his behavior involving her children. That was the moment she knew it was time to cut ties. “Like, you’re just gaslighting me,” she said, adding that she no longer has space in her life for people who cause her pain. “Even if it’s a parent, life’s too short.”
A Pattern That Started in Childhood
This wasn’t the first time Kristin opened up about her father. Back in December 2023, she discussed their toxic relationship on her podcast Let’s Be Honest, in a conversation with psychologist Dr. Sherrie Campbell.
She explained that her father would often put her down as a child but would occasionally praise her—when it benefitted him. “Now, as an adult looking back, it was when it benefited you and made you look good,” she said.
Kristin described her childhood as confusing, where she never truly felt safe or supported. This left a mark on her that carried into adulthood, even influencing who she chose to marry.
Her Marriage Reflected Her Past
In a later podcast episode of Dumb Blonde with Bunnie Xo, Kristin admitted that she ended up “marrying her dad.” She said the dynamic she had with Jay Cutler mirrored the complicated and painful one she had with her father.
“I hadn’t done the work on my relationship with my dad,” she said. “That’s what you do. I ended up marrying my dad.”
Kristin added that after her divorce, she took the time to finally work through her unresolved issues. “So when we got a divorce, for the last five years, quite honestly, I’ve really taken the time to get my s— together so that I don’t then make the same mistake.”
Letting Go Was the Last Step in Healing
For Kristin, distancing herself from her father was the final part of her personal healing journey. She said that although it was difficult, she finally feels free. The weight she carried for decades is gone, and she can now move forward in a healthier space—both for herself and her children.
Kristin’s story reminds many people that even family ties can be harmful, and sometimes, walking away is the only path to peace.
